Abstract:: This collection contains letters, manuscript fragments, autographs, and other documents by famous authors. The material dates from 1666 to 1990 with the bulk of the collection consisting of letters written by the authors to various friends with some letters to editors or critics.

Scott O'Dell papers, 1959-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Scott O'Dell (1898-1989) was a well-known author of historical fiction for children, most notably the Newbery award-winning Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960). This collection consists of a typescript for the book Island of the Blue Dolphins and related award ceremony materials.

Hendrik Willem Van Loon typescript and illustrations, 1917

Abstract:: Hendrik Willem Van Loon (1882-1944) was a journalist, historian, radio personality, writer, and illustrator who published more than fifty books on history for a children and adults. The Van Loon papers include a typescript for A Short History of Discovery (1917) with original color illustrations.

Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers, 1875-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers contain, correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, memorabilia, audio-visual material, financial and legal material documenting the private and public life of Sophia and her husband, author Lewis Mumford. A large majority of this collection is remnants of Lewis Mumford's papers that remained in their house upon his death in 1990 and were finally transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after her death in 1997.

John B. Thayer memorial collection of the sinking of the Titanic, 1912-2012 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John "Jack" Borland Thayer (1894-1945) and his mother, Marian Longstreth Morris Thayer (circa 1872-1944), survived the sinking of the Titanic along with only 705 other people. His father, John Borland Thayer (1862-1912) died during the only voyage of the "unsinkable" ship. The John B. Thayer memorial collection of the sinking of the Titanic, contains first-hand accounts of the sinking, Thayer family material, and more recent material documenting the continued interest in and efforts to memorialize the tragedy.

Melvin Benarde papers, 1968-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Melvin Benarde papers collection is a set of typescript drafts of books written and edited by Melvin Benarde. Benarde is the author of ten books on the topic of humanity's effect on the environment and a professor in the Graduate Program in Industrial Hygiene at Temple University, the Department of Community Medicine at Hahnemann Medical School, and the Environmental Studies Institute at Drexel University. The typescripts are annotated, some heavily and some with copy edits and instructions to typesetters. Titles include Race Against Famine, Our Precarious Habitat, Disinfection, and The Chemicals we Eat.
