Abstract:: A handwritten diary, by J. H. Slack of Philadelphia. The volume, probably bound by Slack, was written in 1858 and recounted his trip to England in spring an summer of 1856. Slack stated in the preface of the diary " [I] wrote with a double purpose, first as a souvenir of my voyage for my own gratification, and secondly to afford pleasure to my large circle of friends to whom my private journal would be inaccessible."

Abstract:: This album is a presentation photograph album given to Sir Malcolm Hailey, later 1st Baron Hailey, by Moona Lal and Sons, photographers. Hailey was governor of the Punjab from 1924 to 1928 and of the United Provinces from 1928 to 1930. The twenty-six photographs in the volume document the completion of the first stages of the works on the Sarda Canal, United Provinces (now Uttar Preadesh).

Abstract:: Little is known about the owner of this album, Alexander Fullerton Huston. Huston probably lived in Pennsylvania in the mid to late 19th century and possibly practiced law. This volume is dated roughly to the 1870s and contains engravings and photographs of European and American royalty, leaders, explorers, scientists, philosophers, and actors. It is divided into thirteen sections, each one being defined by a geographic region. Within these sections, there are engravings and photographs of the most influential people of that area presented in chronological order.

Amelia Smith Calvert photographs of Costa Rican plants, circa 1909-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:: "Photographs of Costa Rican plants" is a two-volume album compiled by biologist Amelia Smith Calvert (1876-1965). Each page of the album features a black and white photograph of a plant native to Costa Rica, with up to a paragraph of type-written text that provides the Latin and common names of the plant, its appearance and characteristics, the specific location where the specimen was found, and the date on which the photograph was taken. Calvert conducted this research on a 1909 to 1910 expedition to Costa Rica with her husband, entomologist Philip Calvert.

While the majority of materials in this collection relate to ophthalmology, some pertain more broadly to medicine or to American history. In addition to the historical medical documents, this collection includes dozens of pairs of antique spectacles and over one hundred ophthalmoscopes.
