Abstract:: Charles Hallowell Stephens (1855-1931), followed several careers; illustrator, art teacher, collector of American Indian artifacts, and amateur anthropologist. Born and raised in Philadelphia he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts studying under the tutelage of Thomas Eakins. The importance of Stephens for the Penn Museum resides in his extensive collection of Native American artifacts that was estimated to have about 2000 items, about 1700 of which were acquired by the Penn Museum in 1945. The collection is divided into eight series: Correspondence, Blackfoot, Sioux, Collection Materials, Correspondence on Data, Visual Material, American Pageant Association, and Photographs.

Vaux Family papers, 1708-1995 (inclusive) 1912-1932 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Abstract:: Theodore Hetzel (1906-1990) was a Quaker professor of engineering at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, whose interests led him to involvement with Native American and Quaker issues. An avid photographer, the materials in this collection are primarily photographic, as well as correspondence and documents.

Zelma Corning Brandt papers, 1906-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Zelma Corning Brandt (1891-1990) was a social crusader active throughout the twentieth century. Her chief interests included the independence and development of colonial countries, American Indian affairs, nuclear disarmament, women's issues, and geriatric concerns. The collection consists of correspondence, travel notes, diaries and writings, and publications and reports, especially from 1960-1989. Brandt's longevity and attention to detail provide a complete view of various world and domestic issues and events through this period. Zelma Brandt attended Bryn Mawr College from 1909 to 1911.

Edward S. Curtis collection of interpositive glass plates and papers, 1899-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) was a photographer, best known for documenting more than eighty tribes of Native Americans west of the Mississippi from the Mexican border to northern Alaska. In addition to taking more than 40,000 pictures over 30 years, Curtis produced The North American Indian, a set of twenty volumes containing text, photogravures, and a corresponding portfolio with additional photogravures. This collection consists of two gifts of glass plate interpositives with extensive artistic modifications by Edward Curtis for his The North American Indian as well as a small number of proof sheets of photogravures, largely from portfolios, bearing editorial markings and corrections; correspondence and material relating to the funding and publishing of the The North American Indian; and brochures and pamphlets advertising Curtis's studio and his photography.

Abstract:: This collection consists of nine images which, to a very limited degree, document indigenous people of the Acomoa Pueblo, Apache, Hopi, Laguna Pueblo, and Navaho tribes in the American southwest, in current day Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Images are of peublos and people (including Juanita, widow of Chief Manuelito; unidentified women; Hopi dancers preparing for the Snake Dance; and unidentified people preparing horses for travel). The identity of the photographer and whether they were documenting the indigenous culture or traveling as a tourist is unknown.

Taylor, Harris, Roman, Frazer, and Smith families papers, 1683-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The families in the Taylor, Harris, Roman, Frazer, and Smith family papers, 1633 to 1980 (bulk 1685 to 1851) are all related by the marriage of Marianne Smith to Dr. Stephen Harris on April 14, 1833. Both sides of the lineage represented in this collection immigrated to Pennsylvania because of religious persecution in England and Ireland. As Presbyterians and Quakers, they no longer wished to live under a series of laws which forced non-Anglicans out of public office, schools and the church as well as prohibiting meetings for non-Anglican worship. These newcomers contributed to the establishment of the government and religious expression in early Chester County. The documents, covering topics such as land surveying, Native Americans, the Revolutionary War, astronomy, publishing, the iron industry, and religious persecution, provide a broad picture of early Chester County and its residents as they interacted with each other at home and in Philadelphia through business, religious, and...(see more)
