Abstract:: The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1984 to 2010, with the bulk of materials dating from 1997-2003. Materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, pamphlets of outside organizations, financial reports, minutes, and agendas. This collection is divided into three series. Records of the Consumer Health Information Center (CHIC), 1991-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1995, the C. Everett Koop Community Health Information Center (CHIC) opened, operated by the Katherine A. Shaw Public Services Division of the Library of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The CHIC was a community resource that provided the public with access to the latest information about medical and health concerns. Available resources included electronic information, journals, newsletters, pamphlets, videocassettes, and a circulating collection of books. The CHIC was operated by the Katherine A. Shaw Public Services Division. The Records of the Consumer Health Information Center span the years 1991 to 2003 and include correspondence regarding planning and operations; grant proposals to fund the CHIC; basic information about the collection materials; and pamphlets, flyers, and branded realia.

Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary, 1875-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

Records of the Committee on the Centennial Celebration, 1886-1887; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Committee on the Centennial Celebration was established 1 October 1884 and held its first meeting on 3 January 1885. The Committee's task was to "consider and report upon an appropriate plan to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the College in 1887." It held sixteen meetings in total, ande made the following recommendations: 1) To form a collection of portraits of past Fellows to be exhibited during the celebration; 2) That the celebration should be held January 3 and 4, 1887, including an address by the President, a reception, a special meeting for conferring diplomas on Associate Fellows, and a dinner at the Union League; and 3) Invitations should be sent to all Fellows of the College as well as presidents of other medical societies, including the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Medical Association. Abstract:: The Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration held its first meeting on January 27, 1937. The Committee were tasked with planning the 150th anniversary celebration of the College, including choosing dates, finding speakers, and hiring caterers for the banquet. The Records of the Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration date from 1937, and document the activities of the Committee. Included in the collection are meeting minutes, correspondence amongst committee members, and reports; correspondence with potential speakers; a list of people to receive invitations, and RSVPs, both accepting and regretful. Abstract:: The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Abstract:: The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. Arthur Asbury Presidential Papers, 2000-2008, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Arthur K. Asbury, Van Meter Professor of Neurology Emeritus, is one of the country's most noted neurologists, recognized for his clinical and experimental studies of peripheral neuropathies, particularly those related to chronic kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Asbury was born in 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1951, and went on to study at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. in 1958. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in medicine, neurology, and neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a teaching fellowship at Harvard Medical School. From 1963 to 1965 he held a research and clinical fellowship in neuropathology at MGH and a research fellowship in neuropathology at Harvard Medical School. Abstract:: The Records of the Committee on By-laws and Ordinances document the preparation of the Ordinances and By-laws of the College of Physicians issued in 1818, 1924, 1935, 1958, 1971, and 1980. Included also are correspondence, reports, and minutes from meetings, dateing from 1966 to 1967, and 1973 to 1978. In 1990, as a result of major changes in the administration of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Committee on By-Laws and Ordinances was eliminated from the list of Standing Committees of the College. The committee's responsibilities were undertaken by the Executive Committee and other ad hoc committees.

Records of the Hall and Grounds Committee, 1967-1977 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Hall Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was first appointed in 1863. It was charged with the maintenance and rental of the College building on 13th and Locust Streets and, later, on 19 South 22nd Street. The committee hired and supervised the College's Superintendent and was also responsible for the preservation of the building's furniture and, until the appointment of the Committee on College Collections, artwork. By 1913, these duties were performed by the Superintendent. By 1972, the oversight of the Superintendent had fallen under the jurisdiction of the Executive Director with whom the Hall Committee worked. In 1973, the name of the committee was changed to the "Hall and Grounds Committee." In 1990, the duties of this committee were assumed by the Committee on Administration.
