Abstract:: John Dickinson (1732-1808), a Philadelphia lawyer and politician, was a major figure in colonial Delaware and Pennsylvania governments and during the early national period. He was an active presence and prolific writer during the American Revolution and early Republic from the passage of the Sugar Act (1764) until the Jefferson presidency (1801 to 1809). He also served in the military as colonel, private, and brigadier general. He married Mary Norris in 1770. John Dickinson died in Delaware in 1808. The John Dickinson papers contains incoming and outgoing correspondence; drafts and original manuscript documents from the revolutionary and early national government, Revolutionary War, Delaware and Pennsylvania government; land papers; legal papers; bills and receipts; collected essays, notes and commonplace books; and estate material. Records of the Building Fund Committee and Building Committee, 1883-1911 (inclusive)

Abstract:: There have several iterations of a Building Fund Committee during the College's history. The first was formed in 1849 to "ascertain and report to the College the probable cost of a lot and the sum necessary to erect thereon a building suitable for the accommodation of the College, and to suggest a plan for raising the funds estimated to be requisite for the execution of the project." In its most recent form, the Committee was likely re-established in the early 1900s when the College began exploring the idea of constructing a new, larger building. The current home of the College was completed in 1909, and the Committee may have been disbanded soon after. The Building Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was appointed on 6 April 1904, shortly after the Fellows elected to construct a new College building on 22nd and Ludlow Streets. Hugh Lenox Hodge Papers, 1817-1833, 1870, 1932, undated

Abstract:: The Hugh Lenox Hodge Papers collection documents portions of Dr. Hugh Lenox Hodge’s medical career. Dr. Hugh Lenox Hodge was a prominent Philadelphia physician who specialized in obstetrics, becoming one of the most renowned figures in that field in the nineteenth century. Hodge also contributed to fighting the cholera epidemic in Philadelphia during 1832. The collection contains two series: “Correspondence,” and “Subject Files,” dating from 1817 to 1833, 1870, 1932, and undated. Materials in the collection include correspondence, case notes, and several documents regarding cholera outbreak in Philadelphia during the 1830s. Researchers interested in Hodge’s medical career or the history of cholera, particularly in Philadelphia, will find material of interest in this collection.

Abstract:: The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter’s collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. The Mütter Museum records document the history of this noted institution from 1887 until 2006. Included in the collection are catalogs of item acquisitions, visitor records, event records, and the papers of several museum curators. Researchers interested in the acquisition policies of the museum, as well as records of events and exhibits held at the Mutter should consult this collection. Additionally, the papers of Gretchen Worden are housed in this collection. Abstract:: The Evans Dental Institute, today known as the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, was founded in 1878 as the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. The Stomatological Society was a professional organization based within the school, active in the middle of the twentieth century, that served to further the knowledge and interests of dentists and dental students. The collection is comprised of papers used by officers of the Stomatological Society to manage the organization. Financial documents, membership applications, secretary and treasurer's ledgers and a small amount of memorabilia comprise the bulk of the collection.
