William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera, 1736-2006, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection's portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.

Abstract:: John Jonik is a postwar and contemporary magazine and political cartoonist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose works have appeared in a wide spectrum of publications ranging from local, independent newspapers, trade and professional journals, to national newspapers and magazines including: The New Yorker, Playboy, National Lampoon, Cosmopolitan, Better Homes and Gardens, Wall Street Journal, and Esquire. His cartoons provide satirical humor and opinions on a range of themes and issues such as social activism, the environment, marijuana use, and healthcare. The John Jonik papers comprise: original published and unpublished cartoons, sketchbooks, tearsheets, printed materials, correspondence, business papers and royalty statements, catalogs, and artifacts.

Samuel R. Joyner artwork collection, 1947-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Samuel R. Joyner is among the small number of African American cartoonists in the United States. Born in Philadelphia in 1924, he received early attention and publication credits. Joyner enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from high school during World War II. Upon his return to the United States, he enrolled into the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now University of the Arts). His experience with racism and discrimination, primarily in the Navy, served as the backdrop for the kind of artwork he desired to produce. Over the years he would become a recognized “visual voice” for African Americans as represented in mass-circulated magazines and newspapers. His work has been published in over 40 different publications. The Samuel Joyner collection includes photographs, original art work and sketches (and photocopies), posters, signs, newspapers and clippings, newsletters, one book of African American illustrations, and ephemera. Abstract:: Marvin Rosefield Keck, (1895-1971) was a musician who served in World War I in Admiral Niblack’s Flagship Band of the Mediterranean Fleet on the Flagship Olympia. The Marvin Rosefield Keck papers, which date from 1916 to 1972, consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, diaries, drawings, photographs, scrapbooks, and unpublished writings. The collection covers Keck's experience in World War I as a band member in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Olympia and his experience in the American Legion band in South Dakota after World War I.

William H. Walker Cartoon Collection, 1894-1922 (inclusive)

Extent:: 43 boxes and 29 oversize folders
Abstract:: The William H. Walker Cartoon Collection reflects the political climate of America during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. Specifically, the cartoons were drawn between 1894 and 1922 for Life Magazine. While the earlier years did not encompass the quantity of cartoons of the latter years, Walker's satirical style is ever poignant. Through the use of humor, Walker directs attention towards such topics as war, immigration and domestic politics. These themes are related to the reader through the synergistic relationship of ink on paper and intellectual wit. In turn, this relationship generated a light, but serious message for all to appreciate.
