Abstract:

Formed in 1798 to give aid to the sick poor, the New York Female Association created the first public female school in New York in 1800. Until 1845, it worked with the Free School Society to establish and maintain public schools in New York while also continuing its efforts to help the indigent. Since 1845, the association has been a small gift-giving committee. The collection includes minutes and financial records.

Abstract:

Mary Sutton (Underhill) Wood (1805-1894) was a Quaker author and poet. Her commonplace book includes reflections on Baltimore Yearly Meeting, the history of the Wood family, the opening of Western Yearly Meeting (1858), journal entries, Canada Yearly Meeting (1867), the Gale of 1821, New York Yearly Meeting (1865), New York Representative Meeting (1876), description of Meeting Houses in New York, London Yearly Meeting, letter from Josiah Forster, extracts of letters, hymns, China plate patterns, the Quaker Hat, and clippings of New York fashions (1880).

The Wood Family Papers contains papers from a Quaker family active in 19th century New York City Friends affairs, compiled by M. S. (Mary Sutton) Wood. Included are business correspondence concerning the printing house founded by Samuel Wood and his sons, correspondence from prominent Friends concerning work for social causes including abolition, freedmen, prisoners, First Day schools, and peace, and genealogical material, writings, and reminiscences by Mary S. Wood.
