Abstract:: Henry Joel Cadbury graduated from Haverford College (A.B. 1903) and Harvard University (M.A. 1904 and Ph.D. 1914). Cadbury served as a trustee and director of Bryn Mawr College for many years and was Chairman for the Board of Directors from 1956 to 1969. He was one of the foudners of the American Friends Service Committee in 1917 and Chairman of that organization 1928-34, 1944-60. AFSC won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Britain's Service Council in 1947. The Henry Joel Cadbury papers holds the papers of the AFSC Family Planning and Population Education Committee relating to a special report being prepared for publication on the subject of abortion. The collection, which is from around 1965-1971, sheds light on the Quaker opinion on abortion, contraceptives, and sex education during the late 1960s-early 1970s.

Abstract:: The primary activity of the Friends' Publishing Corporation is Friends Journal, a Quaker periodical. The latter was the successor to The Friend, the serial published by the Orthodox Quakers (1827-1955) and Friends Intelligencer, published by the Hicksite Quakers (1844-1955). It was established as a result of the merger of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, and the first consolidated issue was dated July 2, 1955. Originally published weekly and then bi-weekly, it became a monthly periodical in 1988.

Francis R. Bacon (1878-1965) Papers, 1941-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Francis R. Bacon (1878-1965), a birthright Quaker, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Architecture in 1913 and was later Dean of Western Reserve University's School of Architecture. He married Edith Melrose Farquhar in 1915, and in the early 1920's they participated in the AFSC child feeding programs in Germany and Russia. This collection primarily includes correspondence, notes, photographs, and other materials related to Francis R. Bacon's research on 17th century Quaker meeting houses. Correspondents include Elfrida Vipont Foulds, Isabel Ross, Beatrice Saxon Snell, Henry J. Cadbury, and others.

William Hubben Papers, 1906-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William Hubben (1895-1974) was a prominent Quaker educator, speaker, editor, and author. Born in Germany in 1895, William Hubben joined the small but growing movement of German Quakers in 1923 and participated in a number of international religious and peace conferences. His political involvement with the Social Democratic Party caused his dismissal in 1933 by Hitler's government. He emigrated to the United States with his wife, Maria, and children soon afterward, and went on to be heavily involved with Quakerism there. The collection contains correspondence (1906-1976), manuscript and published writings (1924-70), editorials, reviews, speeches, notes, pictures and memorabilia, and reference materials of William Hubben. Part of the collection is in German.

Abstract:: The National Council Against Conscription had its first official meeting on December 13, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Nation Council Against Conscription worked to defeat various legislative measures which promoted universal military training and peacetime conscription, by lobbying Congress, public speaking, publishing detailed analyses of proposed legislation, corresponding with magazine and newspaper editors about their coverage of Universal Military Training, and producing literature on the subject.

Edward W. Evans Papers, 1916-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward Wyatt Evans (1882-1976) was a lifelong member of the Germantown (Pennsylvania) Monthly Meeting and was active in the Friends Peace Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Evans was instrumental in the founding of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (Fellowship of Reconcilation), and was the executive secretary from 1916-1919. During the 1920s, he was also active in educational and peace programs of the Society of Friends.
