Bryn Mawr College Scrapbook and Photo Album Collection, 1885-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of a large number of scrapbooks assembled by Bryn Mawr College Alumnae, focusing on their years at Bryn Mawr College. The alumnae represented graduated at various times between 1891 and 1950. The vast majority of the scrapbooks come from the earlier years of Bryn Mawr College. There is huge variety among items in this collection. Some scrapbooks contain a great deal of material while others are sparse. Some provide commentary on the items, ranging from simple labels to diary-length entries. Most contain personal memorabilia such as letters and cards, as well as Bryn Mawr College-related materials. These include programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs from dances and dinners, and college traditions material. Poems, drawings, and notes from friends give a distinctive perspective into the daily life at Bryn Mawr College. Frances Arnold Family Letters, 1893-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Frances Arnold was born in New York City in 1874, daughter of Francis and Augusta Arnold. After graduating the Brearly School, she attended Bryn Mawr College from 1893 to 1895, affiliating herself with the class of 1897. Upon leaving the College, she attended French finishing school and traveled abroad. In 1899 she returned to New York to teach mathematics at Brearly. Except for a brief stint supervising women building torpedos during World War I, Arnold remained at Brearly until 1930. She then retired to New Hampshire, where she was involved with community affairs. The Frances Arnold family letters comprise a collection of the personal correspondence of Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897. The letters in the collection range from 1895 to 1902. The bulk of the collection is personal correspondence between Arnold and her family and Arnold's personal memorabilia.

Mildred Pressinger (Kienbusch) scrapbook, 1905-1909 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mildred Pressinger (later Kienbusch) graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in Philosophy and Psychology. She was a member of the Mayflower Descendants, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Founder and Patriots, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in a number of charities in New York City. She married Carl Otto von Kienbusch, the owner of an internationally celebrated collection of medieval arms and armor. Mildred Kienbusch died in 1968. The Mildred Pressinger scrapbook houses a very large one-volume scrapbook containing a great deal of material from Pressinger's four years at Bryn Mawr College (1905-1909). The scrapbook contains a large amount of Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. Bryn Mawr College Posters for International Expositions Collection, 1893-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bryn Mawr College showcased its mission and prestigious programs at international expositions with an array of displayed materials. The awards in the collection demonstrate the success of these exhibitions and recognition of the high level of education provided to the undergraduate and graduate students in attendance at the college. The earliest exhibited materials in the collection were shown in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the college won an Educational Exhibit Award. Bryn Mawr was a relatively young institution at the time of the exposition in Chicago, having been open for less than ten years. In 1900, Bryn Mawr College had a more established reputation within the international community. The collection includes materials from the Paris exposition, though there are fewer materials in comparison with the St. Louis exhibit only four years later. Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.
