American Law Institute Statement of Essential Human Rights Project records, 1924-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In the midst of World War II, the American Law Institute convened a committee in 1941 to study the international community's position regarding human rights law. The committee's charge was to develop a Statement of Essential Human Rights. William Draper Lewis, then Director of the American Law Institute, was chair of the committee and the project's most outspoken advocate, touring the world to deliver speeches on the importance of a code of basic human rights. International in scope and in participation, the committee included representatives from Britain, Canada, China, France, pre-Nazi Germany, Italy, India, Latin America, Poland, Soviet Russia, Spain, and Syria. A version of the Statement of Essential Human Rights was finalized in 1945. Principles and Rules of Transnational Civil Procedure records, 1996-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 2004 the Governing Council of UNIDROIT adopted the Principles of Transnational Civil Procedure prepared by a joint American Law Institute/UNIDROIT Study Group. The Principles, consisting of 31 provisions, aim at reconciling differences among various national rules of civil procedure, taking into account the peculiarities of transnational disputes as compared to purely domestic ones. The collection, 1996-2004, includes drafts and related records regarding the drafting of the principles.

Abstract:
The Ira Ellman Family Dissolution Papers house the correspondence and printed material of the Chief Reporter of the American Law Institute on the ten year study of the Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution. The collection chronicles Ellman's term as Chief Reporter on the Project starting in 1991 and ranging until the study's completion in 2001. A majority of the collection is composed of printed material of various sources and Principle drafts, as well as some correspondence between Ellman and a variety of law professors concerning the process of creating tentative drafts on the issue of family dissolution. The subject of all of these documents dealt with sub-topics of family dissolution. A large number of drafts of the Principles of Family Dissolution compose the collection. The collection looks at the treatment of partners, division of property, private agreements and formal contracts, child support and custodial responsibility.

Abstract:
The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. An association of practitioners and scholars known as the "Committee on the Establishment of a Permanent Organization for Improvement of Law" published a study that recommended a lawyers' organization be formed to improve the law and its administration. The committee was chaired by Elihu Root and counted Learned Hand, Benjamin Cardozo, and Samuel Williston among its members. This photograph collection is comprised of portraits of ALI directors, presidents, members, and staff. Also included are photographs from the Annual Meeting, including the 1st Annual Meeting in 1923.

Lawrence Waggoner papers (Restatement of the Law), 1995-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Lawrence Waggoner is considered a prominent figure in law reform in the field of wills, trusts, and future interests. Not only did Waggoner teach law for 44 years, he also had an influential role outside the classroom. He served as adviser for the Restatement (Third) of Trusts, reporter for the Restatement (Third) of Property, Wills, and Other Donative Transfers, director of research for the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Trusts and Estates Acts, reporter for the Uniform Probate Code which he completed the revisions for in 2008, and one of his last publications was the last volume of the Restatement (Third) of Property: Wills and Other Donative Transfers. He presented the draft at the annual meeting of the American Law Institute, May 2010. The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." The Third Restatement of the Law covered subjects including Foreign Relations Law and the Law Governing Lawyers.
