Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Darlington family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Woodstown, New Jersey. Quakers with strong ties to Swarthmore College, the family was involved in education, social and peace concerns, and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Charles J. Darlington (1894-1966) served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends during the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. The collection includes family correspondence relating to the Darlington, Shortlidge, Gause, and Palmer families as well as genealogical research and 20th century Quaker activities.

Brand Blanshard Papers, circa 1920-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Brand Blanshard was a Quaker philosopher, writer, and teacher. He taught philosophy at Swarthmore College 1925-1944 and subsequently at Yale University until 1962 where he served as the chairman of the Philosophy Department. The collection contains primarily published writings and some correspondence and unpublished speeches.

Abstract:: This collection consists of records of the New Presidential Nominating Committee for the 11th President of Swarthmore College, 1972-1973, and the Presidential Nominating Committee for the 12th President of Swarthmore College, 1981-1982, as well as records from hiring several other executive office positions: Dean of Students, Dean of the College, Assistant to the President, and Vice President of Finance. The files do not contain personal information about specific candidates. They do contain records about committee formation and procedures, job descriptions, templates for correspondence with candidates, committee meeting minutes and correspondence, and other papers.

William J. Cooper Foundation Committee records, 1943-1974 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The William J. Cooper Foundation provides funding for lectures, exhibits, concerts, and performances at Swarthmore College. The Cooper Foundation Committee, composed of students, faculty members, and staff members, works with members of all campus constituencies to arrange events and residencies. The William J. Cooper Foundation Committee records, 1943-1974, consists of administrative files that primarily document the committee's efforts to select, arrange, and publicize events.

Swarthmore College Outing Club records, circa 1961-1968 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Swarthmore Outing Club, still active and known as "The Outsiders" as of 2015, plans excursions such as hiking, climbing, and backpacking for students. In 1961, interested students in the Outing Club registered as Swarthmore Grotto #98, a student chapter of the National Speleological Society. This collection of Swarthmore Outing Club records, circa 1961-1968, consists of files on caves explored by the club and issues of the club's biannual newsletter.

Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Chapter Records, 1921-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Phi Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was established at Swarthmore College in 1906. By 1991, it was abolished, a victim of mounting debt and student disinterest. The collection includes correspondence, 1956-1957, concerning the Chapter's pledging of an African American, the first at the College; other correspondence mostly concerning the mounting debt; and agreements and leases.

Kappa Sigma Pi Records, 1958-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Kappa Sigma Pi was the Pi Chapter of the national fraternity Kappa Sigma until 1962 when it was suspended on charges of "attempting to involve other chapters in organizing to defy some of the Kappa Sigma basic principles." The local folded in 1971 due to low membership and financial debt. This small collection contains material pertaining to its last years.

Abstract:: The American businessman John T. Diebold, founder of the Diebold Group, Inc. and author of the management classic Automation, was a graduate of Swarthmore College (class of 1949). This collection consists of 89 scrapbooks carefully constructed by Diebold to document his life and the major events of his business career and personal life.

Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College slide collection, 1925-2005 (inclusive)

Extent:: 8.6 cubic ft. (13 boxes)
Abstract:: The Arthur Hoyt Scott Horticultural Foundation was established at Swarthmore College in 1929 as a memorial to Arthur Hoyt Scott (1874-1927). The intention of the Foundation was to focus on plantings appropriate to Eastern Pennsylvania, creating a practical "garden of ideas" for amateur gardeners while at the same time improving the campus. The name changed to Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College in 1986. This collection consists of slides of plants, the Scott Arboretum, Arboretum employees, and other arboretums.
