Bennett W. Andrews and Florence N. Andrews Papers, 1940-1950, 1979-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bennett Andrews was an absolutist conscientious objector during World War II. He served a five year sentence Danbury Prison, a federal penitentiary, in Connecticut. There he worked in a number of positions in the prison. Bennett Andrews was released from prison on July 11, 1946 and received amnesty from President Truman in 1947. Florence Andrews (born in 1913) married Bennett on July 22, 1938. She was also a strong pacifist, who fully supported her husband's C.O. stance.

Abstract:: This collection documents the annual conference (1895-1916) held at Mohonk Mountain House, Ulster County, New York; conference for 1917 was planned but not held; at their height, the conferences attracted 300 leaders of government, business, religion, the press, and education; the purpose of the conferences was to create and direct public sentiment in favor of international arbitration, arbitration treaties, and an international court.

Abstract:: Women Strike for Peace came into existence on November 1, 1961, as a protest against atmospheric nuclear tests by the U.S. and the Soviet Union. By the late 1980s the national WSP office in Philadelphia closed, but the WSP legislative office and various WSP branches around the U.S. remained active through the 1990s.

Macedonia Cooperative Community Records, 1937-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Macedonia Cooperative Community was formed in 1937 northern Georgia by Morris Randolph Mitchell (1895-1976), an educator who later served as the first president of Friends World College. The Macedonia Cooperative Community, which took its name from a nearby Baptist Church, was comprised of families who worked collectively on dairy, agricultural, forestry, and woodworking projects that provided the economic underpinnings of the community. Originally established as an economic cooperative, Macedonia later passed through two distinctive phases before it folded in 1958.

Abstract:: This collection contains over 240 mainly incoming manuscript letters addressed to Thomas Evans, a Philadelphia druggist, author, editor, Orthodox Quaker minister of Philadelphia and, in 1833, one the founders of Haverford College. The letters, 1823-1859, contain material on his very active role in the Society of Friends and the problems of religious doctrine before and during the Hicksite and Wilburite schisms within the Quaker faith. The collection also includes papers and legal documents from Evans' role as trustee for multiple Quaker estates.
