Birkinbine Engineering Company Records, Collection II, 1840-1963

Abstract:: The Birkinbine Engineering Company got its start through Henry P. M. Birkinbine. His son, John, gained early engineering experience through various water supply projects in and around Philadelphia; this experience later helped direct the Birkinbine Engineering Company's involvement in many water-related projects around the country in the late 19th century as part of the improved public sanitation initiatives. The Birkinbine firm also specialized in mining engineering, both in the United States and Mexico. John also had a firm grounding in mechanical engineering through his work in the Weimer Machine Works in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. John's interest in manufacturing pig iron from charcoal, combined with his knowledge of hydraulics, catalyzed his concern for the condition of forests in Pennsylvania and he became one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. Abstract:: The Philip I. and Muriel M. Berman Papers: Collection I contains records ranging in date from 1915 to 1999, the earliest dated item being apparently a letter from the painter Walter Elmer Schofield (Box 76 Folder 3). Most of the records belong to the period 1960-1997.

Willis Appleford Slater Papers

Abstract:: This collection is composed of the papers of Willis A. Slater, a Lehigh University civil engineering professor, chair of the department and director of Fritz Engineering Laboratory. The papers give insight into Slater's professional career as a civil engineer, particularly his work with reinforced concrete. The items contained in this collection range from 1910 to 1937 and include reports, blueprints, diaries, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks. Of particular interest are Slater's papers on the construction of the Stevenson Creek Dam.

C.C. Hsiung Papers

Abstract:: "C.C. Hsiung Papers" contains correspondence on personal and academic matters, drafts and manuscripts of publications, syllabi, lectures, conference, colloquium and seminar documents, and mathematical notes documenting the career of Lehigh University Professor of Mathematics Chuan-Chih Hsiung who was the founder and the chief editor of the Journal of Differential Geometry. The collection also contains photographs, books and reprints of articles, and correspondence with Chinese scholars who were applying to American colleges. The collection's coverage is from 1937 to 2004; most of the documents are from 1952 to 1984.

Poster of Asa Packer Letter of Acceptance for Governor

Abstract:: Political poster contains Asa Packer's acceptance of running for governor in the 1869 gubernatorial elections on the Democratic Party ticket. The election took place on October 12, 1869 and Packer lost to republikcan candidate John W. Geary by 4596 votes.

Automobile Road Maps of Europe and North America, 1922-1926

Abstract:: Collection composed primarily of Alphonse Taride maps for regions of France circa 1920s and a few other vintage maps: Brentano's British Isles, Rand McNally's New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Canadian Maritime Provinces and Germany's Schwartzwald region. The maps reflect the era of the establishment of the automobile as a cultural symbol of freedom of the road and travel between the two World Wars.
