Abstract:

Robley Dunglison was born in Keswick, England, on 4 January 1798. He attended the Royal College of Surgeons in 1818, received a license as surgeon apothecary from the Society of Apothecaries, and began practice in 1819. In 1823, he received an M.D. from the University of Erlangen. From 1823 to 1833, Dunglison was professor of medicine at the University of Virginia; from 1833 to 1836, he was professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. In 1836, he came to Philadelphia to become professor of the institutes of medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He held this post until 1868. He died in Philadelphia in 1869. The Robley Dunglison autobiographical ana was written by Dunglison, circa 1852, and is comprised of eight volumes, with some supplemental correspondence previously tipped in. An ana is a collection of memorable sayings of, or anecdotes and interesting information about a person or place. Abstract:

The Jones Family Papers, spanning from 1881 to 1968, documents parts of the family practice and life as a family where the patriarch is a country doctor. The collection contains 45 rpm records, photographs, correspondence, financial records in the form of patient cards and ledgers, notebooks, patient records and personal records. The Jones Family Papers focus on several of country doctors from West Virginia. William Notly Jones is the first doctor of the family, but is not well represented with this collection. The materials mainly focus on the later generations of men: Andersen Porter Jones, Latimer Porter Jones, and James Porter Jones.

Abstract:

The Benjamin Rush Letter and Portrait collection, dated 1809, is a small collection that contains correspondence and portraits. Benjamin Rush was born in Byberry Township, PA on January 4, 1746. He was an American physician, politician and educator who is best known for his activities during the American Revolution and for signing the Declaration of Independence. He helped found the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and founded Dickinson College, located in Carlisle, PA.

Addinell Hewson photographs of surgery patients, 1861-1865

Abstract:

The Addinell Hewson photographs of surgery patients is a small collection of seven photographs, dating between 1861 and 1865, and including tumors, fractures, and amputations. Addinell Hewson was born in 1828 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1850. He was a resident of Pennsylvania Hospital, and later opened his own practice. Hewson also served as assistant surgeon to the Hospital of the Protestant Episcopal Church, surgeon to Wills Hospital for Diseases of the Eye, surgeon at the Pennsylvania Hospital, and a contract surgeon for during the American Civil War, on duty at Cherry Street Hospital in Philadelphia, among other positions. He was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1853. Notably, he performed an amputation of the thigh at the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1865, using torsion instead of ligatures, and invented a torsion forceps. Abstract:

The Library Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia became a standing committee in 1834. The by-laws of this year state that the Library Committee "shall attend to the increase and preservation of the Library...they shall purchase books and carry into effect all such regulations pertaining to the Library...and shall present a report upon its condition." At this time, the chairman of the Library Committee acted as the Librarian of the College. In 1863, the Office of the Librarian was created, and the duties of the Library Committee were reduced to the "general supervision of the Library of the College." Also during this year, the Committee became responsible for providing an estimate of the Library's annual expenses. In 1870, due to an increasing demand for the Library's resources, it was decided that a member of the Committee would attend in the Library daily and receive an annual salary for his services. Sylvanus Stall Records of Vir Publishing Company, 1899-1911 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Sylvanus Stall (18 October 1847 – 6 November 1915) was a United States Lutheran pastor, most famous for his 1897 sex education and anti-masturbation book What A Young Boy Ought To Know and its many sequels. This book, and others, were part of a series called "Self and Sex," and were published by Stall's publishing company, Vir Publishing Company, between 1897 and 1904. The Sylvanus Stall Records of Vir Publishing Company span the years 1899 to 1911, and documents the activities of the publisher of the "Self and Sex" series of books, published between 1897 and 1904. This small collection consists mostly of correspondence, 1906 to 1910, between Stall for the Vir Publishing Company, authors, firms contracted to sell the books, and purchasers of the books. Most letters are in English, but a few are in German. In addition to correspondence, there are contracts between Vir and G. H. James Tyson papers, circa 1873-1914; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

James Tyson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1841. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1863, and served as acting assistant surgeon in the United States Army and resident physician at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Later he served as professor of pathology at Penn. Tyson succeeded William Pepper as chair in the practice of medicine, a position he held until 1914. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1866, and served as its President from 1907 until 1910. He died in 1918. The James Tyson papers date from circa 1873 to 1914 and document parts of a nineteenth-century Philadelphia physician's professional life. The collection is divided into five series and includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, genealogical information, and writings. Previously catalogued as 10c 30 and 10c 44.

William W. Keen papers II, 1885-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:

William Williams Keen, surgeon and neurologist, was born in 1837 in Philadelphia. He entered Jefferson Medical College in 1860, left in 1861 to become Surgeon to the 5th Massachusetts Regiment, then returned to Jefferson and received his M.D. in 1862. He then became Acting Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Army. In 1887, at St. Mary's Hospital in Philadelphia, Keen performed the first successful removal of a brain tumor in the United States. He was the first physician to perform a decompression of the skull and also the first physician in Philadelphia to use Lister's antiseptic surgical practices. He was elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1867 and was its president (1900-1901). Keen died in 1932. This small collection of correspondence dates from 1885 to 1926, and fills in gaps found in the William W. Keen papers (MSS 2/076-01 – MSS 2/076-07) and William W. Keen correspondence (MSS 430). Katharine R. Sturgis papers II, 1953-1975; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

Katharine Rosenbaum Guest Boucot Sturgis was born in Philadelphia in 1903, and graduated from Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia in 1940. Katharine R. Sturgis's connection with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia began in 1951 when she was elected a Fellow. In 1972, after more than twenty years as a member, Sturgis became the College's first woman president. A year later, she was forced to retire due to health problems. Sturgis died in Philadelphia in 1987. The Katharine R. Sturgis papers II is a small collection which dates from 1953 to 1975, and adds to the materials found in the Katharine R. Sturgis papers (MSS 2/355). Recognition for Sturgis' work, correspondence with colleagues, and photographs are included in this collection. Previously catalogued as 10c 123 and Z10c 32.
