Abstract:

Arthur K. Asbury, Van Meter Professor of Neurology Emeritus, is one of the country's most noted neurologists, recognized for his clinical and experimental studies of peripheral neuropathies, particularly those related to chronic kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Asbury was born in 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1951, and went on to study at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. in 1958. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in medicine, neurology, and neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a teaching fellowship at Harvard Medical School. From 1963 to 1965 he held a research and clinical fellowship in neuropathology at MGH and a research fellowship in neuropathology at Harvard Medical School. Abstract:

The Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia opened in 1911 in Wynnefield, PA, at the Country Branch of Children's Hospital. The hospital had limited wards to house its patients and the staff hosted pre-and post-natal clinics for mothers, though the physicians of the Babies Hospital largely emphasized treatment in the home. The records of the Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia, spanning from 1911-1960, contain annual reports, newsletter pamphlets, benefit matinee programs, material related to H. Lea Hudson for both the Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia and the Fife-Hamill Memorial Health Center for Southeast Philadelphia, corporate reports, photographs, and film. Records of the Committee on the Centennial Celebration, 1886-1887; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Committee on the Centennial Celebration was established 1 October 1884 and held its first meeting on 3 January 1885. The Committee's task was to "consider and report upon an appropriate plan to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the College in 1887." It held sixteen meetings in total, ande made the following recommendations: 1) To form a collection of portraits of past Fellows to be exhibited during the celebration; 2) That the celebration should be held January 3 and 4, 1887, including an address by the President, a reception, a special meeting for conferring diplomas on Associate Fellows, and a dinner at the Union League; and 3) Invitations should be sent to all Fellows of the College as well as presidents of other medical societies, including the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Medical Association. Abstract:

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The Reports of the Honorary Librarian and Library Committee span the years 1836 through February 1951. This collection contains annual and monthly reports prepared by the Honorary Librarian, 1864 through February 1951. Also included in the collection are annual reports by the Library Committee, 1836 through 1939. Previously catalogued as 10c 21.

Abstract:

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The Records of book borrowed collection dates from 1792 to 1894, and holds by-laws for the Library from 1792, along with logs of books circulated in the Library for those years. Information found in each volume includes the date checked out, the accession[?] number of the book, its title, the borrower's name, any fines incurred, the date returned, and whether it was renewed. Most of the borrowers were College Fellows. Previously catalogued as 10c 23.

Abstract:

The Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration held its first meeting on January 27, 1937. The Committee were tasked with planning the 150th anniversary celebration of the College, including choosing dates, finding speakers, and hiring caterers for the banquet. The Records of the Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration date from 1937, and document the activities of the Committee. Included in the collection are meeting minutes, correspondence amongst committee members, and reports; correspondence with potential speakers; a list of people to receive invitations, and RSVPs, both accepting and regretful. Records of the Hospital and Dispensary for the Relief of Diseases of the Rectum and Genito-Urinary Organs, 1875-1888

Abstract:

The Hospital and Dispensary for the Relief of Diseases of the Rectum and Genito-Urinary Organs was incorporated December 6, 1875, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its purpose was to "furnish gratuitous medical and surgical advice and treatment to all poor people (without regard to creed, sex, or race) who suffer from any form of disease of the rectum or genito-urinary organs." E. C. Hine, L. S. Clark were the surgeons, and H. Lenox Hodge was the consulting surgeon, for the Hospital. Opened as a dispensary only, the Hospital did not provide beds for patients. The Hospital's Board of Governors carried out its work from July 1876 until September 1878, when the Hospital was forced to vacate the premises for unknown reasons. The work was discontinued after that date due to lack of interest and difficulty in obtaining funding. Abstract:

The Records of the Committee on Finance date from 1899 to 1912, 1935 to 1939, and 1967 to 1978. They document the activities of the Committee, who had the general supervision of the financial affairs of the College, including the power to authorize and to direct the sale or transfer of stocks, bonds, or other investments and real property belonging to the College; and to borrow money in an amount not to exceed the limit established by resolution of the Board. This committee was disbanded during the 2016 by-laws revision. Previously catalogued as 10c 120.

Abstract:

The Office of the Librarian of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1854. In 1997, governance voted to officially make the Library an historical library. The Director of the Library was in charge of the historical collections, with Public Services in charge of modem reference. In July 2001 the Director's position became that of College Librarian, with the added title of Director of the Francis C. Wood Institute for the History of Medicine. While the Library continued to acquire and save consumer health material and some other current material, the College Librarian's principle duty was the preservation, promotion, and enhancement of the historical collection. This small collection of material documents the operation of the Library from 1883 to 1901. Not all years are represented.
