Abstract:

John Szwed (1396-) is an American anthropologist and jazz scholar who wrote a biography of Sun Ra. Sun Ra (1914-1993) was an American musician, jazz composer, and bandleader known for experimental music and theatrical performances. The John Szwed collection of Sun Ra material measures 4.25 linear feet and dates from 1935 to 2018. It includes material related to Szwed's biography of Sun Ra, Space is the Place: The Lives and Times of Sun Ra and research on Sun Ra documenting his life, band, and music.

Hall and Hallam family papers, 1785-1818 (inclusive)

Abstract:

This collection consists of material relating to the Hall and Hallam families in the Leicester area of England, dating from 1785 to 1818. The families appear to have farmed, but they also appear to have been extremely religious, serving as lay preachers and religious leaders for the surrounding communities. The collection contains a recipe book for inks and sealing wax, a commonplace book, a survey for Alton Grange Farm, a diary, and a sermon or speech. While several items are specifically tied to these two families, the other material is assumed to be connected to family members. There is only superficial documentation of any member of the family, but collectively, there is a sense of religious faith crossing generations.

Holly McGhee is New York City-based author, agent, editor, and founder of the children's literature agency, Pippin Properties, Inc. The Holly McGhee papers measure 5.2 linear feet in eight boxes and date from 1947 to 2020, with the bulk of the material dating between 1979 and 2018. The papers largely document McGhee's personal life, family, writings as a children's book author, and early career in publishing. Her work with Pippin Properties, Inc. is represented in the Pippin Properties, Inc. records, also held by the Kislak Center.

G. & C. Merriam, bookseller and publisher, was established in 1831 by George and Charles Merriam in Springfield, Massachusetts. Primarily, the firm sold schoolbooks, Bibles, law books, and editions of Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language. This collection documents, to a limited degree, the operations of G. & C. Merriam (1831-1864) and the G. & C. Merriam Company (1864-1892) through correspondence, financial records, and advertising.
