Jon A. Peterson earned a B.A. in History from Swarthmore College in 1957, an M.A. in History from the Ohio State University in 1959, and a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University in 1967. As a faculty member at Queens College, City University of New York, Peterson published The Birth of City Planning in the United States, 1840–1917 (2003).
Robert D. Cross (1924-2003) was a religious and social historian who was a member of Swarthmore's faculty for seven years and returned to serve as president of the college from 1969 to 1971.
J. Roland Pennock (1906-1995) was a prominent professor of Political Science at Swarthmore College where he taught from 1932 to 1976.
Monroe C. Beardsley (1915-1985) was an American philosopher of art and one of Swarthmore's most prominent professors.
This collection consists of coursework from honors seminars taught by three prominent Swarthmore College professors: American Intellectual History, taught by Robert D. Cross in 1954-1955; Political Theory, taught by J. Roland Pennock in Fall 1955; and History of Modern Philosophy, and taught by Monroe C. Beardsley in Spring 1956. Depending on the course, some combination of the following is present: syllabi and/or exam instructions issued by the professor; class and study review notes recorded by Jon A. Peterson; seminar papers and exams written by Jon A. Peterson or his classmates. The collection also contains syllabi from several additional honors seminars taken by Jon A. Peterson (Europe, 1760-1870, taught by Paul H. Beik in Fall 1955; Politics and Legislation, taught by Maurice S. Stedman in Spring 1956; and Modern Europe, 1870-1959, taught by Laurence D. Lafore in Fall 1956).

At the time of donation, this collection consisted of notes from eight honors seminars plus one non-honors course (Robert D. Cross). During processing in 2017, three courses were selected as a representative sample, and syllabi from any remaining courses were retained, while the rest of the course materials were discarded with the permission of to the donor.
