Overview and metadata sections
In conjunction with the United States Bicentennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1976, twelve local colleges and universities banded together to create a large-scale public exhibition. The Area Universities' Bicentennial Exhibition, titled "Learning, Revolution, and Democracy," was on view at Penn Mutual Tower on Independence Square from March through December of 1976. The participants, known as the University and College Consortium for the Bicentennial, were: Bryn Mawr College, Drexel University, Haverford College, La Salle College, Lincoln University, the Medical College of Pennsylvania, St. Joseph's College, Swarthmore College, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University, University of Pennsylvania, and Villanova University. The coordinating staff for the exhibition were based out of the University of Pennsylvania.
This collection consists of documents collected by Ken Landis, Swarthmore College Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs, relating to plans for the Area Universities' Bicentennial Exhibition. Some of the materials are internal to Swarthmore and relate to the college's contributions to the exhibit, but there is also correspondence with other members of the University and College Consortium for the Bicentennial about coordinating plans. Lastly, there is a file of Delaware County Cultural Committee records. Letters, memorandums, press releases, exhibit label copy, newspaper clippings, and other document types can be found in the collection.
