Overview and metadata sections
Friends Peace Teams (FPT) is an international non-profit charitable organization founded by North American Quaker Yearly Meetings in 1993. It works to promote world peace and decolonization, oppose racism and political violence, and facilitate Quaker Meetings and individual participation in peace work by visiting locations experiencing violence.
The African Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI) was established in 1999 when an international delegation of members visited Africa following the Rwandan genocide, and focuses on promoting peace activities in Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. FPT currently works in conjunction with peace organizations in 15 countries.
This collection includes records of Friends Peace Teams Council, the governing body of the group, such as meeting minutes and financial records. Subject files contain organizational correspondence, African Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI) reports, information relating to kindred charitable organizations, and individual files of FPT participants, including Val Liveoak, coordinator of FPT's Peacebuilding en las Américas from 1993-2016.
