Overview and metadata sections

According to the seller's description, the author of this manuscript journal was apothecary owner and physician Carl Daniel Schliwa of Breslau, now Wroclaw, Poland. On the inside of the front cover, there is a laid in piece of paper that gives more information about the provenance of the book. It states "Receptenbuch aus der Coseler Apotheke meines Grossvaters, Carl Caniel Schliwa, Aus dem Besitz von Onkel Arnold," [Recipe book of the Coseler Apothecary of my grandfather, Carl Daniel Schliwa, from the property of Uncle Arnold]. No other information is known about Schliwa.

There is a stamp on the first page of the volume that states "Apotheke in Kösel - R. Schliwa," for an unknown person, but likely related to Carl Daniel Schliwa.

This volume was compiled by Carl Daniel Schliwa and contains dozens of medicinal and household remedy recipes arranged in alphabetical order, in German, Latin and Spanish, dating from 1819 to 1857. There are at least four different authors who contributed to the volume, but it is unknown to who the different handwriting belongs. Some of the handwriting is in the form of Kurrent.

Included in the recipes are candle wax, elixirs, liquors, eau de colognes, pills, powders, tinctures, uses for cochineal insects (p. 319), a tincture for cholera by a Dr. Schmidt of Vienna (p. 205), and a medicinal recipe for cholera containing arrowroot and camphor by a Dr. [Krapusky] (p. 23). In between the recipes, there are essays, lecture notes and descriptions of different diseases, medical procedures, and medicinal and homeopathic cures attributed to a variety of physicians and chemists including Pierre Hippolyte Boutigny (1798-1884) (p. 6) and Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge (1795-1867) (pgs. 190-197).

Pages 18, 68-71, 74, 80, 85, 92, 119, 129, 132, 160, 172, 200 and 234 are blank. Laid in items such as recipes and notes are found between the front cover and the title page and between pp. 218-219, 286-287, 346-347, and 352-353. A page has been removed between pp. 104-105. On the title page there is a name inscribed that may read "Wolff [Kaswel]." There is an illustration of an unknown scientific device on page 275 on the right margin. There is possible bookworm damage between pages 271 and 284. This volume lacks a back cover and the front cover is mostly detached.
