Overview and metadata sections

Arthur Bertram Gabel was a professor in the dental school at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of the American Textbook of Operative Dentistry. He was born in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania in 1890 and went on to be a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1910, Columbia University in 1917, and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1925. He studied at the École Supérieure d'Électricité and the Sorbonne in Paris in 1919. He had a long career as a professor of physics at schools including Princeton Preparatory School from 1914 to 1916, Columbia University from 1916 to 1917, and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School from 1922 to 1925. He was also a professor and department head of operative dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1931 until his retirement and was a visiting professor at the dental school of the University of São Paulo, Brazil from 1951 to 1953.

This collection contains Arthur Bertram Gabel's lecture and research notes. There are four types of notes in this collection; Brazil lecture notes, student lecture notes, professional lecture notes, and research notes. The dates of the collection range from 1921 to 1952. The student lecture notes are from 1921 to 1925, when he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. The professional lectures and research notes date from 1942 to 1943 when he was a professor and department head at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. The Brazil lecture notes are from 1952 when Gabel was a visiting professor at the dental school of the University of São Paulo. The research concerns the "flow of methyl methacrylates" and the lectures cover a wide range of dental topics.
