Abstract:

This notebook was kept and written in by Edward Ellingham (1811-1848) from 1835 to 1848 and by an unidentified individual from Ellingham's death through 1852. It contains music scores, accounts, pharmaceutical and veterinary recipes, records of the deaths and other life events of Ellingham's family and acquaintances, and notes relating to Ellingham's work as a farmer.

Edward Ellingham was a farmer born in Hertfordshire, England on March 15, 1811 to John Ellingham and Ann Chennells.

In 1830, he married Charlotte Knapp (1804-1882) at St. Michael Church in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Together they had seven children: John James Ellingham (1831-1879), William Ellingham (1833-1850), Louisa Anne Ellingham (1835-1864), Alfred Ellingham (1838-1898), Gabriel Ellingham (1840-1883), Charlotte Alice Ellingham (1842-1902), and Ann Eliza Ellingham (1845-1894).

As of the 1841 census, the family lived at Bourne Hill in St. Stephens, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. A note in this volume indicates that Ellingham lived both at Bourne Hill and Chiswell Green, which appear to neighbor each other in St. Albans.

Several of the death records in this volume indicate that members of the Ellingham family were buried in the cemetery of St. Stephens Parish Church.

This notebook was kept and written by Edward Ellingham from 1835 to 1848 and by an unidentified individual from Ellingham's death through 1852. It contains music scores, accounts, pharmaceutical and veterinary recipes, records of the deaths and other life events of Ellingham's family and acquaintances, and notes relating to Ellingham's work as a farmer.

The notebook is bound in full leather with a brass clasp. The middle portion of the volume is blank (p. 103-241).

Edward Ellingham's name and addresses are recorded on the front cover, back fly leaf, and sides of this volume and he appears to have been the primary contributor to this volume. However, his death in 1848 is recorded (p. 258) and entries continue through 1852, indicating that a second individual contributed to this volume as well. The music scores (p. 2-25) are handwritten and include several Psalms verses, "Pleyels German Hymn," "Turkish march," and "come haste to the wedding."

The accounts appear to vary widely and seem to be largely related to the family's farm, such as the accounts of lambs sold (p. 242-245), but may also include personal accounts.

There are several records of deaths, weddings, and other notable events in the lives of Ellingham's friends and family in this volume. For example, the death of Ellingham's father is recorded on February 11, 1843 (p. 8), Hannah Ellingham's death is recorded in in 1846, and Hannah's daughter, Esther Ellingham's, death is recorded in in 1848 (p. 27-28).

Other, more mundane events are recorded, including visits from family members and typical farm business.

There is a mention of an encounter between W. Ellingham and a poacher on the Ellingham farm (p. 252) and a theft of hens from the henhouse at Chiswell Green (p. 341).

Examples of the pharmaceutical and veterinary recipes in this notebook include receipt for sore eyes when a cold is with them (p. 29), cure for chilblains (p. 31), cure for the hooping cough (p. 32), a receipt for making butter without churning (p. 34), for the measles (p. 36), to know when a mare is in fowl [sic] (p. 37), receipt for rheumatic fever (p. 50), to break the gravel stone (p. 53), and for a nick or sprain in the horse's leg (p. 72).
