Overview and metadata sections
Nothing is known about the creator of this volume, Hannah Flinders, other than that she was active in England from 1802-1809.
The name "Charles Dundas, M.P. of Barton Court, Newbury, Berkshire" is written on the first page of this volume. It is unclear why Flinders recorded this name and address, and nothing is known about the connection between Flinders and Dundas if any existed.
Charles Dundas (1751-1832) was a veteran Whig and Member of Parliament from 1774 to 1832. During that time, he represented Richmond (1774), Orkney and Shetland (1781-1784), Richmond again (1784-1786), and Berkshire (1794-1832).

This volume contains 63 recipes and fifty-three pages of poems, verse, and grammar lessons written and compiled by Hannah Flinders in England between 1802 and 1809.
The first portion of the volume contains recipes and includes the creator's name in addition to that of Charles Dundas, M.P. (p. i) and an index (p. ii). There are two pages of recipes laid into the volume (p. 5-6). There are blank pages after the recipes (p. 22-25). The text for the second portion (p. 26-79), which begins at the end of the volume, is inverted. This portion contains poems, verse, and grammar lessons, much of which seems copied from other writers, though few contain attributions.
Examples of recipes in this volume include, lemon cakes (p. 1), beef olives (p. 4), black cherry brandy (p. 8), pills for spasms in the stomach (p. 11), an ointment for a sore breast (p. 12), hooping cough (whooping cough) (p. 13), potatoe[sic] yeast (p. 19), and a cooling lotion (p. 21).
Examples of the poems, prayers, and grammar lessons, include, "On Animals" (p. 31-36), "Enigma by Lord Byron" (p. 46-47), "careless and faithful love" (p. 55), "on the death of a much-loved child" (p. 62-64), and "matrimonial rules addressed to a young lady" (p. 71-74).
