According to the seller's description, this volume belonged to dentist, pharmacist, and physician, Jonathan Spencer. The identity of the creator is not specified within the volume.
Jonathan Spencer (1785-1859) was born to Thomas (1766-1842) and Betty (-1788) Spencer in Walmersley, Lancashire, England. He married Elizabeth Chorley (1784-) in Manchester, Lancashire, England in 1807 and together they had a son, Charles Spencer (1813-1872).
At the time of the 1851 England Census, Jonathan and Elizabeth Spencer lived at 135 Little Holcombe, Bury, Lancashire, England and his occupation was listed as druggist. There are two leaves in the volume from a W. Bowman Chemist and Druggist of Bolton Street, Bury, which could possibly have been Spencer's employer.
This volume was created and compiled by Jonathan Spencer, a dentist, pharmacist, and physician from Lancashire, England, starting as early as 1810. It is unclear when the creator completed this volume. This volume contains 133 pharmaceutical recipes, organized semi-alphabetically by remedy type.
The remedy types, in order, are balls/bals, cerevisciae (yeasts), cataplasma (poultices), ceratums (ointments), collyrs (eyewashes), creamers[?], drops, elixes, oil/ols, oxymels (honey and vinegar), tincts, vinis, and syrups. The majority of the remedies are elixes, tincts, vinis, and syrups.
The ingredient lists are written in Latin and the methods, when given, are written in English.
