A chemist and druggist shop once located on Preston Road in Brighton, Sussex County, England.
These two volumes were probably of several volumes of prescription books kept by Dudley, Short & Company a pharmacy serving Brighton area. The volumes are comprised of formulas for prescriptions spanning the years from 1907 to 1912. The volumes contain over over 3800 written prescriptions arranged chronologically. Written for each numerical entry is the patients name, formula, and the initials or name of the chemist or prescribing physician. Some items have the patient dosage and use instructions. Ailments and titles of the prescription formulas are rarely listed. A tabbed alphabetical index is at the beginning each volume arranged by patient name. Volume 1 spans the years from 1907 to 1909 beginning with prescription number 36437 and ending with number 37261. The volume has pre-printed pages in black and red. Each page has two columns one labeled name, no. & price and one labeled prescription. Pages are numbered 1 to 502 and pages 223 to 502 are blank. A label on the inside front cover reads: Ford Shapland & Co. ... manufacturing stationters, Holborn, W. C. Written on the first endpaper verso: Dudley, Short & Comp., Oct. 4th 1907. Spine label is stamped in gold and reads Prescription book. A handwritten spine label reads: D 63437 to 37261. Volume 2 spans the years from 1910 to 1912. A company name is not indicated, but may be from the same druggist's shop in Brighton. This volume has 504 numbered pages and beginning prescription number 38090 and ending with number 41166. The spine is stamped in gold and reads: Prescription book. A handwritten spine label has the letter M. A label on the inside front cover reads: James Townsend & Sons, wholesale stationers, Exeter & Londo
