Joseph Gilbert, junior married Ellen Heathcote on June 9, 1818 in Bakewell, Derbyshire, England.
An oblong, leather volume with a metal clasp closure. The volume is comprised of culinary and medicinal recipes, weights and measurements, directions for making an ice house, and geography. The volume was written by Joseph and Ellen Gilbert of Derbyshire, England and spans the years from 1812 to 1863. Standard units of weights and measures for ale, apothecary items, cloth, height, land, time, and wool are included. Additionally, are practical agricultural measures for a haystack, irregular shaped fields, and a water trough. Culinary and household recipes include buns, cakes, custards, Derby shortcakes, gingerbread, pies, puddings, and wines. There are medicinal recipes for colic, consumption, coughs, eye waters, fevers, and other ailments. Many recipes have attributions such as Mrs. T. Heathcote, Mrs. Martin, and Mrs. Williams. The volume also contains a section on the geography of Europe and England with detailed information concerning English counties and government. A prayer and letter signed by the Angel Gabriel concerning Jesus are on pages 50-53. The name Joseph Gilbert is on a label affixed to the inside front cover. An inscription on the inside front cover is from Joseph to his wife Ellen in 1819. The volume is written in two hands. There are two indexes listing the items in the volume. Following the first two leaves the pages are enumerated 1 to 260. Several pages are blank. Two clippings of recipes are laid in the volume. The front and back covers are semi-detached.
