Abstract:

The Philadelphia Trail Club was founded in 1931 by Philadelphia area members of the Boston-based Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). The group of 25 men and women began to plan hiking excursions, or "tramps," in and around Philadelphia. The Club also planned canoeing, skating, swimming, camping and other outdoor trips, as well as dinners and dances. More recently, the PTC also planned international hiking trips, including to England and Scotland. The PTC was made responsible for developing and maintaining a section of the Appalachian Trail.

The Philadelphia Trail Club (PTC) Records include meeting minutes, board records, correspondence, financial records, and newsletters documenting the activities of the PTC from its founding in 1931 to 2023. There are also records of hikes taken in the Philadelphia region, many including photographs, dating back to 1931. Other photographs document international trips planned and sponsored by the Club. The records also include documentation of the Appalachian Trail. The PTC was charged with maintaining a section of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, and the records here offer evidence of the PTC's responsibilities and activities in regard to that section. The collection includes paper based records as well as born digital records. Some digital records have been migrated to a library server, others remain on CDs and will need to be transferred prior to use.
