Overview and metadata sections
Founded in 1975 in Philadelphia, the Anna Crusis Women's Choir brings together a diverse musical community of women from a variety of backgrounds, sexual orientations, ages, races, and religions. Still active in 2018, the Choir is a performing arts group that uses music as an agent of social change, with a focus on issues affecting women, youth, and other disadvantaged populations. It actively supports a number of causes, including promoting peace, guarding reproductive rights, ending poverty, achieving gender equality, supporting the LGBTQ community, and fighting rape and abuse. Its musical selections range from jazz, blues, and classical to folk, native chants, and original compositions by women.
The Choir performs for diverse audiences, including people and communities that have little access to the arts, such as prison populations. It supports other progressive social justice organizations by singing at benefits and fundraisers. The Choir is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA).
The Anna Crusis Women's Choir Records document the organization from 1975 to 2017, evidencing its governance, musical repertoire, performances, and philosophies, especially regarding its views on politics and social justice. The records include board and committee minutes; articles of incorporation and bylaws; internal communications, "Choir Notes" and "Choirside Chats;" general correspondence; assorted alphabetically arranged administrative and subject files; and financial records. There are concert programs, newsletters, flyers, and other printed materials and publications; professional and amateur audio recordings; and a collection of musical scores. There are also records relating to the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA), of which Anna Crusis was a charter member. With the GALA records, there are also records for other similar organization, including Women's Choral Movement, Chorus America, and the Sisters Singers Network Festival.
This collection also includes preserved versions of the organization's website, available through Archive-It.
