Overview and metadata sections
The Delaware Valley Toxics Coalition (DVTC) was founded in 1979, growing out of a conference organized by the Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Health and Safety (PHILAPOSH) and Public Interest Law Center. The group consisted of community members, environmentalists, and union members. The coalition successfully campaigned for the passage in Philadelphia of a 1981 "right to know" law regarding toxic chemicals being introduced into the environment. In 1983, they published Winning the Right to Know: A Handbook for Toxics Activists. They published the reports Pennsylvania Toxic Chemical Release Inventory Report around 1989, and Toxic Chemical Release Inventory: Pennsylvania in 1990.
Collection contains administrative records, minutes, financial records, and extensive subject files containing publications, reports, clippings and other materials of interest to the DVTC. In particular, there are files related to the campaign for the 1981 right to know law and to concerns with lead levels around the Anzon, Inc., lead plant in Port Richmond, Philadelphia. There are also records from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
The collection is arranged roughly as it came into the repository. Some boxes are described at the box level, some at the folder level, and some are described in a combination of both.
Donated by the Delaware Valley Toxics Coalition, November 8, 1999, Accession 916.
Original audiovisual materials, as well as preservation and duplicating masters, may not be played. Researchers must consult use copies, or if none exist must pay for a use copy. Certain digital files may also be inaccessible. Please contact the Special Collections Research Center for more information.
Collection was minimally processed and finding aid prepared in February 2016 by Sarah Lerner, Student Worker, and Katy Rawdon, Coordinator of Technical Services. The materials are housed in records center boxes, but not always in folders. Only those original boxes and folders in poor condition have been replaced.
