John Seely Hart was an educator, author, and editor. He graduated from Princeton University in 1830, and became principal of Central High School in Philadelphia in 1842.

Samuel Sparks Fisher was a student at Central High School. He later attended West Point, studied law, served during the Civil War and rose to the rank of colonel, served as commissioner of patents under President Ulysses S. Grant, and as president of the Cincinnati Board of Education.

Bound volume of 13 lectures by John Seely Hart, transcribed by student Samuel Sparks Fisher, on the history of the public schools of Philadelphia from 1809 to 1842. The lectures contain ink and water illustrations of school buildings, as well as calligraphic flourishes, section headings, and pictorial devices, all by Fisher. Schools illustrated and their principals are identified, and include Anthony Benezet School, Central High School, Fulton Grammar School, Hamilton Grammar School, Harrison Grammar School, Jefferson Grammar School, Madison School, Marlborough Street School, Mount Vernon School, Normal School, Thomas Mifflin School, and Wayne School.
