Abstract:
The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

Abstract:
In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of Operations span the years 1975 to 2019; however, the bulk of the material dates from 1991 through 2007. Abstract:
The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History III span the years 1966 to 2004, and consist of correspondence, annual reports, lecture announcements, speaker information, and Executive Committee minutes. Abstract:
The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. Records of Section on Humanism in Medicine, 1986-2007 (inclusive) 2002-2007 (bulk)

Abstract:
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia developed the Section on Humanism in Medicine to help enrich the curriculum of local medical schools in the area. This initiative was conceptualized in the early 2000s and ended in 2007, with funding supported by Horace W. Goldsmith and Arcadia Foundations. The Section aimed to bridge the arts and humanities with medicine, inviting visiting scholars, doubling as successful poets and writers, to present their compositions and artists to exhibit their creations surrounding the core theme of hope and healing amongst pain. The Records of the Section on Humanism in Medicine spans from 1986 to 2007. The collection consists mostly of paper materials (with some mixed materials) involving speaker lectures or artist exhibitions offered at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CPP) during these years. Records of the Section on Dermatology, 1986-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Section on Dermatology was established by Lawrence Parish and Joseph Witkowski on December 22, 1981. The requirements for membership were "a professional interest in and a respect for dermatology." The Section held four or five meetings a year on Wednesday evenings; these meetings generally included a lecture followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Dermatology. The Records of the Section on Dermatology span the years 1986 to 2001 and consist mainly of correspondence. General correspondence (1986 to 1997) files contain a brief history of the Section, thank-you notes for monetary donations, correspondence with speakers, and some membership lists, but focus mainly on the financial situation of the Section. Records of Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine IV, 1979-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was established in 1976 to promote to the scholarly community the rich historical resources of the College's historical library and the Mütter Museum. From its founding, the Wood Institute also took over printing and editorial duties of the College's journal, Transactions and Studies, which was published in 1793 and from 1844 to 2002. As of 2019, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) date from 1979 to 2004 and are divided into three series: Administration, Programs, and Travel grants & Fellows.

Abstract:
Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia’s leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM. The E.B. Krumbhaar papers covers Krumbhaar’s accomplishments and contributions to pathology and cardiac physiology from the early to mid-twentieth century. This collection contains Krumbhaar’s research files, administrative records related to organizations and institutions in which he was involved, correspondence, and medical writings. Particular strengths include documentation of Krumbhaar’s research on pathology, the founding of the American Association for the History of Medicine in 1930 and 1931, his service as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1939 to 1942, his professorship of Pathology at the...(see more)
