Overview and metadata sections

Charles Holt (1821-1892) was a farmer in what is now Lower Moreland Township, Pennsylvania. His daughter, Carrie K. Holt (1866-1916), married Abraham Yerkes.

This collection is comprised chiefly of the papers of Charles Holt (1829-1892), who sold a portion of his Huntingdon Valley farm to John Pitcairn. Holt's diary, 1855-June 1861, contains brief entries with reports on weather, farm work, overnight trips to market, attending Abington, Germantown and Norristown meetings, funerals, and his brother Jesse. There are some comments on politics and other events. The diary is continued by Charles' daughter Carrie K. Holt (b. 1866), 1890-1893, in which she gives accounts of the weather, Sunday School and church, the market, farm and house work, and occasional local news. There is a complete description of her trip to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, through Niagara Falls, in August 1893.

There are also Charles Holt's account books, 1858-1897 (3 volumes), including an inventory of his estate. One volume has some recipes for curing illnesses. Miscellaneous materials consist of Charles' Abington Friends School exercise books and other family papers.

Gift of Mrs. Eleanor Holt Cobb, 2004.
