Overview and metadata sections

J.J. Johnston worked as a messenger for George R. Stearns, the Director of Public Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the tenure of Philadelphia Mayor John E. Reyburn, 1907-1911.

This collection consists of six large scrapbooks, 1907-1911, compiled by John J. Johnston (identified as Mr. Johnston in the scrapbooks) while he worked as a messenger for Philadelphia's director of public works, George Stearns. The scrapbooks consist of newspaper clippings related to Philadelphia public works and city administration during Mayor John E. Reyburn's term in office, 1907-1911. The newspaper clippings include articles on city administration, including snow removal, the city's financial systems, city parades, mass transit, streets, and events, as well as city administrators. Several of the articles are about George Stearns and John Reyburn.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2014-2016 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Historical Society of Frankford directly for more information.
