Overview and metadata sections

Samuel S. Psoras was a photojournalist at Philadelphia Daily News for over 50 years. He was born in Philadelphia in 1926 to Greek restauranteus John and Aphrodita Psoras, and served in the army during World War II. Afterwards, he worked as a "gopher" for the Evening Bulletin and briefly held positions at the International News and Saturday Evening Post. Then he was hired at the Philadelphia Daily News, where he remained for fifty years, attaining the post of Photo Manager. Psoras photographed many important individuals, including Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr., The Beatles, Joe DiMaggio, Malcolm X, Frank Sinatra, Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, and numerous Presidents and politicians.

This collection consists of photograph negatives and prints taken by Psoras of Philadelphia fires. Some are identified with location. A video history done by Terry Ruggles and Sam Psoras complements this collection.

Gift of Sam Psoras.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of a pilot project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Fireman's Hall Museum directly for more information.
