Overview and metadata sections

Joseph C. Farley Sr. (abt 1900-1988) was a charter member of the Philadelphia Second Alarmers Association. Founded in 1921, the Second Alarmers is a volunteer group that provides comfort and aid to firefighters and policemen during major events and emergencies.

This collection consists of over 100 scrapbooks focused on fire incidents in Philadelphia and the history of fire fighting. Most are arranged chronologically, with a few focused on special topics (e.g. Vagas Hotel Fire, train crashes, Native Americans, etc). At least one scrapbook includes some original receipts, calling cards, and other documents relating to a Lieutenant Herbert Heston (circa 1898). Heston's connection to Farley is unknown, but he was a 1st Lieutenant in Company E of the First Regiment of the National Guard of Pennsylvania.

Bequest of Joseph Farley, circa 1988.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of a pilot project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Fireman's Hall Museum directly for more information.
