Overview and metadata sections

Upper Providence Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was settled in 1682 and incorporated as a township in 1687. Early settlers were Swedish and Welsh. A large community of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) was established there. In the 18th and 19th century, the area was popular for Philadelphians escaping the summer heat; Rose Tree Tavern (built in 1739) and Idlewild Hotel (established in 1871) were popular destinations.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.
