Overview and metadata sections
Kenneth George Hanauer; Kenneth G. Hanauer; born 1933; conscientious objector; enrolled in the University of Maryland in 1956, having already served time two years as a conscientious objector under Selective Service orders in lieu of military training; when entering the University, he was ordered to enroll in ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps), which he refused to do. The U.S. Supreme Court let stand a Maryland court decision holding that the University of Maryland had the right to deny matriculation by Kenneth Hanauer unless he agreed to take the ROTC course.
