Overview and metadata sections
Michael S. Foley is the author of Confronting the War Machine: Draft Resistance During the Vietnam War (2003), and of Dear Dr. Spock: Letters About the Vietnam War to America's Favorite Baby Doctor (2005).
The collection contains correspondence with participants in the Boston Draft Resistance Group (BDRG), that Foley contacted for research in his dissertation, and later book, Confronting the war machine: draft resistance during the Vietnam War (Chapel Hill : University of North Carolina Press, c2003). In addition to the correspondence questionnaires and transcripts of interviews with are included in the collection. Foley's interviews with many of the former members of the BDRG, along with questionnaires filled out by many draft resisters, provide valuable source material.
This collection consists first of 11 boxes arranged by correspondence; then a series of transcripts of interviews of BDRG members, between 1997 and 2001, organized alphabetically by the last name of the interviewee; questionnaires used by Foley for the interviews, organized by an internal numbering system; some Boston Support Committee records; and a set of reference files covering the BDRG, local Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts issues during the Vietnam war, and items by or about BDRG members. Two boxes were added in 2017.
The Swarthmore College Peace Collection is the official repository for the papers of Michael S. Foley.
