Overview and metadata sections
Contains handwritten, typewritten, and printout drafts and notes of Juan Gelman's writings, audiovisual materials, photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed materials, awards, and analog and born-digital research and investigation files related to politics and human rights abuses in Argentina and Uruguay.
Additional materials consist of original drafts and documents related to Juan Gelman's writing; letters received by Juan Gelman from colleagues, friends, and family; publishing contracts; letters, contracts, and other documents about Juan Gelman's work as a translator; poems, notes, articles, and other texts, many of these related to the campaign to lift the ban on Juan Gelman's entry into Argentina and his return to Buenos Aires; newspaper and magazine clippings related to the ban on Juan Gelman's entry into Argentina, as well as celebrating his return; personal papers of Juan Gelman and others related to Marcelo and Paulina, including photographs of Gelman and the family; poems and other works by other writers; and audio cassettes, including the music Juan Gelman listened to while writing and cassettes with interviews with Juan Gasparini, writer, former Montonero and former ESMA prisoner.

The majority of the collection is open for research.
These boxes (B-000765, B-000766 and B-000767) are closed to the public until May 3, 2030: Correspondencia familiar; Investigación: correos electrónicos desde 1998 a 2000. This material is intellectually organized in Series 2: Correspondence, and Series 4: Family / Investigation, but physically stored in restricted boxes.
The papers contain 164 3.5" floppy disks pertaining to Gelman's human rights investigations that have been digitally preserved and are pending public access.

This series includes files pertaining to Juan Gelman's writing that include research files, notes, handwritten, typewritten, and printout drafts with handwritten edits of his poetry, prose, and journalism. It also includes photocopy and printed material of Gelman's published work. Most folder titles were left intact as how Gelman had labeled them. These folders include descriptors in Spanish such as "borrador II," "en proceso," and "inédito."

This series features the bulk of Gelman and La Madrid's human rights campaign and investigation documents, photographs, correspondence, and printed media materials. When possible, original folder titles and their contents were kept.

Included here are materials relating to Gelman's brief return to Argentina in 1988, after living abroad in exile since 1975. At the time, Gelman lived abroad in Paris and worked as a translator for the United Nations. He was allowed to come back to Argentina to report to the General Appeals Court to explain his relationship with the Montoneros. After his trip to Argentina he settled in Mexico permanently.

María Fernanda Mussio is the adopted daughter of Augusta Ursini and Horacio Fernando Mussio. Mussio was a person of interest when Gelman was conducting his investigation to find his granddaughter. Before finding Macarena Gelman, Juan Gelman thought Mussio was his lost grandchild. Included here are printout emails between Gelman and various correspondents and computer scanned and printed photographs of Mussio.

The additional files consist of original drafts and documents related to Juan Gelman's writings; letters received by Juan Gelman from colleagues, friends, and family; publishing contracts; letters, contracts, and other documents about Juan Gelman's work as a translator; poems, notes, articles, and other texts, many of these related to the campaign to lift the ban on Juan Gelman's entry into Argentina and his eventual return to Buenos Aires; newspaper and magazine clippings related to the ban on Juan Gelman's entry into Argentina, as well as celebrating his return; personal papers of Juan Gelman and others related to Marcelo and Paulina, including documents related to Marcelo's disappearance and photographs of Gelman and the family; poems and other works by other writers; and audio cassettes, including music Juan Gelman listened to while writing and cassettes with interviews with Juan Gasparini, writer, former Montonero and former ESMA prisoner.
