Overview and metadata sections
The Chicano Press Organization was a student news group established at Princeton University in the late 1970s with the purpose to publish newsletters, open letters, articles, leaflets, and other publications pertaining to Chicano affairs at Princeton, at other Ivy League universities, and around the world. Founding officers of the Organization include Michael Montoya (Class of 1982) as President, Robert E. Barragan (Class of 1984) as Vice President, and Anthony Carrick (Class of 1984) as Secretary and Treasurer.
The organization's activities, which chiefly took place in the early 1980s, consisted of publishing Nuestra Voces, which was the official newsletter of the separate yet allied Princeton organization The Chicano Caucus, and submitting materials for publication to the Third World Center Vigil, the Daily Princetonian, and the New York Times. Other activities of the organization included recruiting prospective Chicano students to Princeton, pressuring the university to diversify its curriculum, disseminating official reports and bulletins as well as publishing Sol de Este, an East Coast Chicano Student newsletter, in collaboration with students from other universities along the east coast of the United States.
The Chicano Press Organization Records are mainly comprised of the group's publications and newsletters Nuestros Voces and Sol del Este. Also included in this collection are notes, reports, directories, and correspondence that provide insight into the experiences of Chicano students at Princeton during the 1980s. The Chicano Press Organization is not the author of each document in the collection, yet maintained these files in the normal course of its organizational business.
