Emil Doernenburg collection of First World War ephemera, 1914-1920 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Collection of 66 items of printed ephemera related to the First World War, nearly all produced by Germans, dating from 1914 to 1920, including mostly fliers, broadsides, posters, and newspapers. The majority of the items date from the war period and either address German military personnel or are related to the civilian war effort. Nine items relate to German-occupied territories. Seven items date from the immediate postwar period, including three items related to the Kapp Putsch. One quarter of the items are illustrated (some in color), including six items (three broadsides and three military newspapers) containing caricatures or cartoons.

Karl T. Marx papers, 1939-1983 (bulk) 1930-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection documents the activities of Karl T. Marx and it spans the years 1930 to 1984 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1939 to 1983. He was a German immigrant who was employed in the textile industry and was also a prolific writer in the German and English languages on a variety of subjects. Some of his writings deal with technical issues related to the textile industry. Other writings include aphorisms, prose and articles related to his interest in German-American history. During World War II, he collected political cartoons related to the war from various newspapers that are arranged in two scrapbooks. The collection also includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, ephemera, and films.

United Singers of Philadelphia records, 1880-1926 (bulk) 1880-1935 (inclusive)

Extent:: 4.0 linear feet (24 boxes + 4 oversize folders)
Abstract:: The collection comprises the records of the umbrella organization United Singers of Philadelphia (Vereinigte Sänger von Philadelphia) from its founding, in 1881, until 1926, with some scattered ephemera dating as late as 1935; included are the records of several regional singing festivals held in Philadelphia (in 1882, 1897, 1912, and 1926) under the auspices of the Nordöstlicher Sängerbund, an alliance of singing societies in the Mid-Atlantic region. The collection includes minute books, financial records, correspondence, membership lists, scrapbooks, three newspaper issues related to Saengerfests (1897, 1912), and ephemera, including souvenir programs, admission tickets, fliers, and singers' badges (1912 festival). Also included are manuscripts in the hand of William A. Haussmann, of essays written for a souvenir program of 1912, and the rehearsal attendance list of the Ladies' Chorus, dated 1925.

Abstract:: The George Handy Bates Samoan papers are made up of correspondence, documents, memoranda, clippings, photographs, and other material relating to George Handy Bates's tenure as a special investigator into Samoan affairs beginning in 1886, and as a commissioner to the 1889 Berlin Conference on Samoan Affairs.

Peter Strickland papers, 1857-1912 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Peter Strickland (1837-1922) was a shipmaster, merchant, and U.S. consul in the French colony of Senegal. Diaries and letter books of Peter Strickland dating 1857 to 1912. While varying in content, the diaries center around Strickland’s life as a merchant, both on the sea as well as in Senegal. Issues of two French colonial weekly newspapers contextualize the events of the French colony during Strickland’s time there.

World War II maps and radio broadcasts collection, 1940-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Emily C. Stump, an executive secretary at Hercules Powder Company, compiled for the company briefing notebooks of newspaper clippings which tracked military progress of Allied and Axis powers throughout World War II. She also collected transcripts of daily radio news broadcasts from stations WOR and WDEL. The World War II maps and radio broadcasts collection includes maps, newspaper clippings, radio broadcasts and militray manuals, documenting war operations in World War II.

Everett C. and Louise Staton Johnson papers, 1835-1988 (inclusive) 1916-1958 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Everett C. & Louise Stanton Johnson papers concern the personal affairs of prominent Delaware publisher and politician Everett C. Johnson (1877-1926) and his wife Louise Staton Johnson (1882-1977). In addition, the collection contains material from their Newark publishing house, the Press of Kells, which brought the Arts and Crafts Movement to the community from 1916 to 1918.

Abstract:: Chris Oakley was a longtime resident of Newark, Delaware, a community organizer and a strong advocate for media democracy. The Chris Oakley collection of alternative press consists of alternative press newspapers, community newsletters, magazines and ephemera related to from local to international communities, women's activism and local writers, as well as some personal papers.

Abstract:: Educator, editor, author, amateur printer, and proponent of the private press, J. Ben Lieberman is widely regarded as the father of the twentieth-century chappel movement in the United States. The J. Ben Lieberman Papers reflect some of the accomplishments of J. Ben Lieberman and his wife Elizabeth Koller Lieberman.
