This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Princeton University Library: University Archives. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.
Overview and metadata sections
Though informal fundraising groups acting under the auspices of the Graduate Council had used the name since the 1920s, the Princeton University Fund as it came to be known was officially assembled in 1940 to provide a permanent organization dedicated to annual giving and other fundraising efforts. Prior to this time University alumni had been subjected to appeals from a number of diverse fundraising bodies, each with a different mission and target. While the newly created Princeton University Fund did not purport to replace these organizations, it did offer a more organized mission and annual giving program, and was generally more successful in its efforts as a result. The fund was headed by a board made up of three trustees, three graduate council members, three faculty, one undergraduate, one non-princetonian, and the president and financial vice-president of the University as ex officio members (who took an active part in most board meetings). The board oversaw the activities of several sub-committees, the most important of which were Annual Giving, Bequests, and Special Gifts. One notable program overseen by the Princeton University Fund was the Class Memorial Insurance Fund, in which alumni would purchase small life insurance policies and then name their respective class fund as a primary beneficiary. After the Office of Development was created by the University in 1956 the Princeton University Fund continued to operate, however by 1967 the bulk of its responsibilities had been taken over, and by the end of the decade it had been completely absorbed into that office.
Consists of detailed committee minutes and correspondence of the Princeton University Fund. Also included in the collection are annual fundraising reports, promotional materials and clippings, and organizational charts.
The majority of the collection, specifically boxes 1-18, 20, and 21, were transferred to the archives on July 8, 1965. Box 19 was received from A. J. Horton in November 1978. Box 22 was transferred to the archives from Annual Giving in 1991 [AR.1991.024].
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Series 2: Special Gifts and Projects, 1940-1957 (bulk 1950-1957) consists of the records of the Princeton University Fund primarily during the second decade of its operation, from around 1950 through the creation of the Office of Development in 1956. It includes correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and other records of its various projects. This series is notable for a set of "Prospects" files about potential donors.

Series 3: Binders and Scrapbooks, 1877-1956 (bulk 1927-1953) consists primarily of lists of donors, gifts, projects and similar, reports, and publicity materials arranged in 3-ring binders. It also contains a scrapbook from the first year of the Princeton University Fund's official operation (1940-1941).
