The Office of Finance and Accounting of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created in March 1971 with the hiring of the first Comptroller, Before this time, the duties of the Comptroller's Office were performed by the College's Executive Director and Executive Secretary or Clerk. The title "Comptroller" became "Controller" by 1990. In 1991, the Controller's Office was renamed the Office of Finance and Accounting, and the Controller became the Director of Finance and Accounting, This is currently [1992] an active office.
The Office of Finance and Accounting is responsible for all accounting and financial record keeping, budget preparation, investments, human resources administration, systems management, and receipt and disbursal of all funds. The Director of Finance and Accounting is the staff liaison with the College's Committee on Audit and Committee on Finance.
The collection contains files maintained by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia's Office of Finance and Accounting and Office of the Treasurer concerning special funds, bequests, and estates, 1858-1992. The files include copies of wills, deeds of trust, and letters of intent; correspondence and memoranda; legal opinions; and accounts of executors and trustees and schedules of distribution, The collection documents the acquisition, intent, and disposition of gifts and funds for the College's general endowment as well as its Library, Mutter Museum, and lectureships and prizes.
Principal correspondents include College officers George E. De Schweinitz, William W. Keen, and S. Weir Mitchell, and lawyers Joseph Carson and Eric A. McCouch, The collection also includes copies of wills or other estate information of Robert Abbe, Pedro Francisco da Costa Alvarenga, Astley Paston Cooper Ashhurst, Louis A. Duhring, Thomas D. Mutter, Lady Grace Revere Gross Osler, J. C. Wilson, George Bacon Wood, and S. Lewis Ziegler. Also included is summary fund information, 1868-1968, containing copies of wills and instruments of donation and several folders of miscellaneous correspondence of the College treasurers, 1884-1959, concerning contracts, investments, and mortgages.
This collection of records of special funds, bequests, and estates of the. College of Physicians of Philadelphia was transferred to the Historical Collections of the Library by Benjamin R, Pierce of the Office of Finance and Accounting on 20 August 1992; additional material was transferred on 5 January 1994.
The collection was processed and catalogued in 1992 and additions made in 1994.
