Overview and metadata sections
The Hall Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was first appointed in 1863. It was charged with the maintenance and rental of the College building on 13th and Locust Streets and, later, on 19 South 22nd Street. The committee hired and supervised the College's Superintendent and was also responsible for the preservation of the building's furniture and, until the appointment of the Committee on College Collections, artwork. By 1913, these duties were performed by the Superintendent. By 1972, the oversight of the Superintendent had fallen under the jurisdiction of the Executive Director with whom the Hall Committee worked. In 1973, the name of the committee was changed to the "Hall and Grounds Committee." In 1990, the duties of this committee were assumed by the Committee on Administration.
Reports, minutes, letters, and financial records, 1864-1968, document the proceedings and business of the Hall Committee and concern the condition, contents, rental, and use of the College buildings at 13th and Locust Streets and 19 South 22nd Street.
Series 1 contains the Hall Committee's reports, generally annual reports, to the College of Physicians and, later, its Council, 1864-1928; later annual reports are filed with the committee minutes. Many of the early reports, written by Edward Hartshorne, describe conditions in the Locust Street building.
Monthly reports of the Superintendent, 1927-1939, are in Series 2. These reports concern the physical state of the 22nd Street building and its repairs, improvements, and problems. Later Superintendent's reports also are filed with the committee minutes.
Minutes of the Hall Committee, 18~4-1968, along with correspondence and reports, are in Series 3.
Series 4 contains three subseries of letters of the Hall Committee chairmen, particularly Morris J, Lewis and Horace Y. Evans. There are two small chronological files, 1882- 1883 and 1900-1909, which are generally concerned with rental matters, and a larger alphabetical subject file, 1886-1896, concerning College furnishings and lighting as well as the donation, acquisition, and loan of portraits and other artworks. An 1888 inventory of all College furnishings and artworks in included.
Series 5 contains cashbooks, receipt books, and a checkbook of the Hall Committee, documenting rental of College facilities and other income and expenditures, 1885-1908.
The bulk of the collection was transferred from the Hall Committee to the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in several lots. Minutes, 1884-1908 [143783, 143784], and the cashbook, 1904-1908 [143785], were transferred on 15 October 1935. Reports of the Superintendent, 1934-1939 [169645], and Minutes, 1924-1944 [169646, 169647, 169648, 169649, 169650], were transferred on 1 March 1949. Minutes, 1945-1948 [169849], were transferred on 2 April 1949. Minutes, 1949-1953 [181525], were transferred on 6 April 1954. The 1886 report of the Hall Committee (215536] was donated by an unknown source, 10 April 1963. The remainder of the material in the collection was also probably transferred from the Hall Committee.
The collection was processed and catalogued in 1992.
