Abstract:

Makefield was one of the five original townships of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, established in 1692. It was divided into Lower Makefield and Upper Makefield in 1737. Largely agricultural for most of its history, Lower Makefield's population swelled with suburban development in the 20th century. The Lower Makefield Historical Society collection of oral histories, house histories, and scrapbooks, 1980-2009, includes audiocassette tapes, VHS tapes, narrative house histories, and photocopies of deeds, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other original items that document the local history of Lower Makefield Township.

Joseph Heacock Company records, 1887-1930 1887-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Joseph Heacock Company, founded by former Pennsylvania State Senator Joseph Heacock, Jr. (1846-1918) and located in Lower Makefield Township (Bucks County, Pa.), served as one of the area's largest employers during the first half of the 20th century. Growers of palms, roses, orchids, and carnations, the company gained international fame, particularly for its roses; its dairy farm served as a significant provider in the surrounding area. The company closed its doors in 1974. The Joseph Heacock Company records, 1887-1930, consist primarily of financial ledgers, such as expense books, account books, and cash books, as well as a few other items including a deed, ephemera, and bylaws.

Abstract:

The Lower Makefield Historical Society deeds and manuscripts collection, 1729-1925, consists primarily of deeds, releases, mortgages, and other property-related documents. The Palmer, Yardley, Ely, Stapler, Cadwallader, and other local families are represented. The collection also includes two minute books from local organizations, the Lower Makefield Total Abstinence Temperance Society (1836) and the Lower Makefield Fremount and Dayton Club (1856).

Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania records, 1933-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The land that is now the Morris Arboretum at the University of Pennsylvania, the official Arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, was previously the private estate of Quaker siblings John Thompson Morris (1847-1915) and Lydia Thompson Morris (1849-1932). Bequeathed to the University of Pennsylvania in 1933, it was part of the University's Botany Department until, in 1975, it was established as a separate Interdisciplinary Resource Center. The Morris Arboretum at the University of Pennsylvania records, 1933-2013, include the office files of former directors, various administrative and financial records, correspondence, press clippings about the Arboretum, membership reports, programs and ephemera, publicity photographs.

Eleanor Morris papers on the Mill at Anselma, 1971-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Eleanor May Morris (1919-2011) was an advocate for conservation of open space and farm land and preservation of historic buildings in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1967, she co-founded with her husband the French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust (FPCCT) and served as its president for thirty years. She was also a founding member of the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust (MAAPET). The Eleanor Morris papers on the Mill at Anselma, 1971-1999, consist of records from FPCCT and MAAPET from Eleanor Morris' home office. The files relate to the Anselma Mill, including FPCCT's acquisition of its property and buildings in the early 1980s, the establishment of Mill at Anselma as an historic site, and the formation of MAAPET in 1998.

Abstract:

John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. His The Birds of North America, written and lushly illustrated by Audubon himself, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. The Audubon-Bakewell-Shaffer family papers, circa 1828-1858, contain letters, manuscripts, and other items from members of the Audubon-Bakewell-Shaffer family. The bulk of the letters are between William Gifford Bakewell and his wife Maria or his sister Lucy Bakewell Audubon.

Raymond J. Middleton bird banding papers, 1928-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Raymond J. Middleton (1898-1980) was a well-known naturalist, conservationist, and civic leader of West Norriton, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was engaged in bird banding for over 40 years, during which time he banded an estimated 57,000 birds. At the core of the Raymond J. Middleton bird banding papers, 1928-1979, are seven bird banding journals. There is also a quantity of form-letter correspondence with the United States Department of the Interior regarding banded birds data, correspondence with various other bird banding associations, and reprints of an ornithology article by Middleton (1969).
