Magnetic Medical Institute correspondence, 1900

Abstract:: Magnetic medicine was a popular (and likely ineffective) medical treatment during the 19th century. It was particularly prominent in the Midwestern United States after the American Civil War. This phenomenon has been attributed to an unsettled frontier atmosphere, a lack of trained physicians, and a tradition of self-treatment. Alternative treatments (or what might be considered quackery) flourished in this region of the United States. The Magnetic Medical Institute was located in Grand Rapids, MI, and likely founded and run by Dr. J. C. Batdorf, who described himself as a "scientific diagnoser and magnetic healer." Not much is known about the Institute.

Friedrich L. J. Boettcher letter and typescript, 9 November 1908

Abstract:: Friedrich L. J. Boettcher could possibly be the artist born 1852, known for illustrator-agricultural subjects, and who lived in the Washington, D.C., area and Germany. Dr. J. Parsons Schaeffer (1878-1970) received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1907, a Master of Arts degree in 1909 from Cornell University, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1910, also from Cornell. He served as Professor of Anatomy at Jefferson Medical College from 1914 until 1948. Schaeffer died on 7 February 1970. This small collection consists of a letter written by Friedrich L. J. Boettcher on 9 November 1908 to Dr. J. Parsons Schaeffer about a transcription of Nathaniel Highmore's description of the maxillary sinus, "Antrum maxillae superioris." Included with the letter is a handwritten copy of "Antrum maxillae superioris" and a typescript copy.

Frederick LaMotte Santee certificates and photographs, 1924; 1945; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Frederick LaMotte Santee was born in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania, on 17 September 1906, to Dr. Charles LaMotte Santee and Verna (Lloyd) Santee. In 1938, he received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, Santee served in the United States Navy medical corps, and then as a physician in a Baltimore, Maryland, housing development. He returned to Wapwollopen in 1954 to work in his father's private practice, where he and his father provided inexpensive, and often free, medical care to the poor in the community. Santee died on 11 April 1980 in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania. The Frederick LaMotte Santee papers consist of three photographs, all undated, and two certificates, dated 1924 and 1945.

Evelyn Cook Bauerle papers on Benjamin Gruskin, 1931-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Evelyn Matthews Cook Bauerle was born in 1910 in Rahway Union, New Jersey. She graduated from Ursinus College in 1930, majoring in chemistry and biology, and assisted Benjamin Gruskin in setting up his new research lab at Temple Medical School, running most of tests summarized in Gruskin's published articles. She remained there until 1939. Bauerle died in 2002 in York, Pennsylvania. Benjamin Gruskin was born in 1878 in either Lithuania or Russia (accounts vary). He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1909, the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery in 1910, and did a post-graduate course at the New York Post-Graduate Hospital and College. By 1930, he was working in a new lab at Temple Medical School. Gruskin's research at Temple focused on serological and intradermal tests for carcinoma and sarcoma, and intradermal tests for pregnancy and tuberculosis. Abstract:: The George Coates papers cover the years 1897 and 1909 to 1910. The collection consists of two volumes, one of answers to surgical examination questions from the University of Pennsylvania in 1897; the other from 1909 to 1910, containing Coates' expenses for the years and what seems to be an address book of Philadelphia-area physicians. Also included in the collection are the questions to the examination questions. George Coates was Coates was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1874. He graduated with A.B. in 1894 and an M.D. in 1897 from the University of Pennsylvania. Coates served as Assistant Surgeon during the Spanish-American War in the United States Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, Coates was a resident physician at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children until 1901, when he opened up his own practice at 1721 Pine Street in Philadelphia. D. Stratton Woodruff Papers, 1930-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: D. Stratton Woodruff M.D. (1924-2006) specialized in family medicine in the Bryn Mawr area of Pennsylvania. In 1975, he co-founded the Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency program with Dr. Ian Ballard. As of now (2019), the program continues to train doctors in family medicine practice. The D. Stratton Woodruff Papers span from the 1930s to 1986. The small collection includes four quarantine signs circa 1930s and a copy of the script of a speech Dr. Woodruff delivered at his Lower Merion Township Board of Health retirement dinner in 1986.

Otto Scheller records, circa 1928; undated

Abstract:: Otto Scheller was born in Bohemia/Czechoslovaka/Austria on 29 June 1881, and immigrated to the United States in 1911. On 14 December 1928, he was admitted to Philadelphia State Hospital (locally known as "Byberry") against his wishes. Doctors Irving and Burr diagnosed Scheller as having "true paranoia" after interviewing him and his sister-in-law, with whom he lived; and inspecting the packages of petitions and correspondence, presumably copies of what Scheller had sent to the various courts. He died of heart disease on 2 December 1948 at Philadelphia State Hospital. The Otto Scheller records consist mostly of manuscript copies of petitions and correspondence sent by Scheller to the Czechoslovak Republic. The petitions ask for the Republic's assistance in obtaining property that Scheller believed he inherited from his grandfather and that was subsequently stolen by the State of Pennsylvania. Abstract:: Lester Lovett Powell was born in 1875 in either Saco or Biddeford, Maine. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1905. Daniel Joseph McCarthy Papers, 1902, 1921-1933, undated

Abstract:: The Daniel Joseph McCarthy Papers document portions of McCarthy’s medical career, particularly his writings and addresses on psychiatry and medical jurisprudence. As a prominent neurologist and medical jurisprudence expert, McCarthy treated wounded soldiers in the First World War, taught for thirty-five years at the University of Pennsylvania, and founded several research and benevolent medical foundations. The collection contains three series; “Writings and Addresses,” “Subject Files,” and “Correspondence”; and ranges in dates from 1902, 1921 to 1933, and undated. Researchers interested in the medical career of Daniel Joseph McCarthy, or in early-twentieth century medical jurisprudence and psychiatry practice will find relevant material in this collection.
