Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Coordinating Committee for Testimonies & Concerns (1974-1998), 1971-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:

In 1974, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was restructured: three Coordinating Committees were each given oversight of the committees and programs under its care. The Coordinating Committee II, more frequently referred to as CC-2, had general responsibility for Testimonies and Concerns. In 1998, a system of standing committees replaced the three Coordinating Committees within Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The Peace and Concerns Standing Committee assumed responsibility for many of the programs that were formerly under CC-2. Includes records of the Coordinating Committee for Testimonies and Concerns of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and its Coordinators, 1974-1998.

Abstract:

The Committee on Economic Problems was appointed in 1937 to cooperate with the Social Order Committee of the Arch Street Yearly Meeting. Clair Wilcox, a Quaker professor of Economics at Swarthmore College was the first Chair. The Committee was interested in a variety of related issues, including industrial relations, unemployment, and economic and social research.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Joint Committee on Cooperation between Arch Street and Race Street (1930-1955), 1930-1935 (inclusive)

Abstract:

In 5mo 1930, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) appointed a committee "for the development of closer cooperation between Arch Street and Race Street Yearly Meetings, and to consider also whether the time of our Yearly Meeting might be changes so that the sessions of the two Meetings would at least in part overlap." Includes records of this Committee, 1930-1935. Of particular interest are surveys of cooperation between the two Philadelphia Quaker bodies to that point, as well as histories of these early orgainzations, including Woolman School, the predecessor to Pendle Hill.

Abstract:

The Central America Working Group of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting began in 1985 under the name "Sanctuary Working Group." In 1986, the group was given over twenty one thousand dollars with which to send volunteers to the American southwestern border to aid refugees. In 1989, the name of the group was changed to the Central America Working Group, and its three main areas of activism became lobbying, education, and refugee assistance. The most recent minute of the group in this collection is dated November 1992, but the final listing of the group in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting directory occurs in 1995/1996.
