Abstract:

The poet and philhellenist H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was born in 1886 in Bethlehem, PA. Around 1895, the Doolittle family moved from the Moravian community in Bethlehem to Upper Darby. While living in Pennsylvania, H.D. met fellow poets Ezra Pound, to whom she was briefly engaged, and William Carlos Williams. Both of the young men were students at the University of Pennyslvania, where Hilda's father was a professor of astronomy. She began attending Bryn Mawr College in 1905 as a day student and made the acquaintance of fellow students Marianne Moore and Mary Herr. After three semesters, H.D. withdrew from college. Her motives for leaving are not clear, although the catalyst may have been illness, poor grades, or her relationship with Ezra Pound. Years later she would write to Mary Herr (1959 July 19) that she was "practically invisible" at the college. The collection consists of one box of material, divided into two categories: Correspondence and Miscellaneous Materials.

Abstract:

The Pennsylvania National Organization for Women (PA NOW) papers occupy fourteen boxes and contain the feminist organization's records about their activities and meetings as well as materials about women's issues such as reproductive rights; violence against women; gender, economic, and constitutional equality; and civil rights. The records date from 1970 to 2007 and include newspaper clippings, articles, meeting notes, office files, activism realia, and lobbying records, among other things.

Judith Kate Haywood Jacoby papers, 1951-1959 (inclusive) 1951-1955 (bulk)

Abstract:

Judith Kate Haywood (later Jacoby) (1934-1997) graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1955 with an AB in economics. Judith was chairwoman of the college's Chapel Committee (1953-1954) and president of the Bryn Mawr League (1954-1955). Just before Judith entered college, she toured Europe. During her college years and after, she continued to pursue her passion for travel by taking trips to Mexico, Alaska, and other parts of North and South America. After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Judith worked for a short time at AT&T as a financial analyst and at Rosemary Hall as a teacher of mathematics. Judith made significant contributions to Bryn Mawr College as an alumna. She played many major roles in the Bryn Mawr College Book Sale in Cambridge, which raised over a million dollars in scholarship funds. Maurine Boie La Barre Papers, 1863-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Maurine Boie La Barre received her B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1927, did graduate work in English there 1927-1928, and received her M.A. in Sociology there in 1932. She received her M.S.W. from Bryn Mawr in 1937 and did further work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she was editor-inchief of The Family, journal of the Family Welfare Association of America in New York City, and in 1943 she wrote the New York Baby Book which was given to every new mother in the city. The Maurine Boie La Barre papers consists of professional publications, personal and academic papers.

Marianne Craig Moore papers, 1904-1991 (inclusive) 1905-1972 (bulk)

Abstract:

Marianne Craig Moore (1887-1972) was an award-winning modernist poet. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1909 with a B.A. in history, economics, and politics. The poet was published for the first time in 1915, and by 1920, her poetry was frequently featured in The Dial, a magazine that served as an outlet for modernist thought and art. From 1925-1929, Moore was editor of The Dial. During the 1930s and 1940s, she published her poetry in books and did freelance writing. The 1950s and 1960s brought Moore fame and recognition: her Collected Poems, published in 1951, won her the Bollingen Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. She was also the recipient of The National Medal for Literature, France's Croix de Chevalier, and sixteen honorary degrees. Throughout her life, she participated in many speaking engagements and offered advice to young poets. Moore was also noteworthy for her iconic tricorn hat and her love for baseball and Brooklyn. Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. Christina Georgina Rossetti collection of Mary Louise and Frederick E. Maser , 1820-1903 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) was one of the most important English female poets of her day, especially known for her works of fantasy, children's poems and religious poetry. The collections "Goblin Market and Other Poems" (1862) and "The Prince's Progress and Other Poems" (1866), both illustrated by brother Dante Gabriel, contain what is undoubtedly her best work and established her reputation. The collection consists primarily of correspondence. Outgoing Correspondence constitutes the main portion of the series and includes approximately 125 outgoing letters to friends, family, clergymen, fellow writers, and others regarding her writing and her social and business activities. Incoming Correspondence consists of four letters from Mackenzie Bell, Rossetti's biographer. Third Party Correspondence contains several letters from Mackenzie Bell, from Dante Gabriel and William Michael Rossetti, and from her sister, Maria Francesca Rossetti.

Abstract:

Anne Poage Funkhouser, BMC Class of 1933, MA 1936 (in German), traveled extensively throughout her life. In her later years she published the two books which are represented here in draft: Voyage of Re-Discovery (1979) and Hieronimus Bosch (1980). Materials include Funkhouser's personal observations, citations of other published works in the field, photographs, and letters. The correspondence is principally concerned with matters regarding Funkhouser's published works. Some of the photographs are Funkhouser's original work, others are from other works and publications.
