Overview and metadata sections
Son of a zoologist, Edmund Gosse was an English poet and literary and art critic. From 1884 to 1890, he was Clark Lecturer in English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in 1904 he was appointed librarian to the House of Lords.
The collection consists of selected material of Gosse, the majority of which is some correspondence with George A. Armour, Princeton Class of 1877. Most of this correspondence discusses other authors or poets and Gosse's different works. Other correspondents include friends and prominent literary figures such as Aldington, Henry Holt, Foote, Ford Madox Ford, R. Le Gallienne, Robert Underwood Johnson, Charles de Kay, Dante G. Rossetti, and Thomas James Wise. In addition, there are two manuscript poems by Gosse, "Fresh with all Airs of Woodland Brooks . . .," presented to the poet Austin Dobson in 1878, and "Ballade of La Belle Disparue" (1894), as well as an engraving of Gosse presented to George Armour; and printed material.
Folders are arranged in accession order.
