Dublin Post Office records, 1880-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:: From 1880 until 1923, the office of postmaster for Dublin (Bucks County, Pennsylvania) was held at various times by J. S. Rickert, Benjamin F. Shearer, and Jacob B. Rosenberger, depending on the political affiliation of the mayor. In 1923, Jacob M. Kooker became postmaster and re-located the post office to his general store. Kooker retired in 1944; the post office remained at the site until 1975. The Dublin Post Office records, 1880-1945, consist of Postmaster's Account and Record Books (4th Class), registers of money orders issued and received, and records of registered letters received and delivered.

American Temperance Society lantern slides, circa 1880-1920

Abstract:: The American Temperance Society, also known as the American Society for the Promotion of Temperance, was established in 1826 in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the first formal national temperance movement in the United States. The American Temperance Society and other temperance movements would hold events and write literature warning people of the dangers of alcohol. American Temperance Society lantern slides, circa 1880-1920, consist of approximately ninety lantern slides, including slides that depict the sad stories of those who give in to the temptation of drinking alcohol, as well as slides of temperance related poems, sheet music, and cartoons. Many of the stories and other slides were intended to inspire guilt among those feeling tempted by alcohol.

Pat Stopper collection on Northeast Philadelphia history, circa 1880-2013 (bulk 1980-2005)

Abstract:: Patricia Worthington Stopper (born 1928) was a local historian in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is involved in many Northeast Philadelphia history societies and groups and has researched and written extensively about the neighborhoods of Bustleton, Somerton, and Byberry. She has also given presentations and lectures at schools, libraries, and historical groups about Northeast Philadelphia history. The Pat Stopper collection on Northeast Philadelphia (Philadelphia, Pa.) history, circa 1880-2013 (bulk 1980-2005), consists of scrapbooks, maps, audio and video recordings, and photographs all relating to Northeast Philadelphia, especially the neighborhoods of Bustleton, Somerton, and Byberry.

Cremer Stereographs Collection, c. 1880

Extent:: 2.0 containers
Abstract:: Stereographs represent an early form of "three dimensional" photography. Images are duplicated and placed side-by-side in order to create a three dimensional effect, an effect which is greatly enhanced with the use of a stereoscopic viewer. Stereographs were an extremely popular commercial success in the late 19th century, largely because they were easily reproduceable. This created an availability and affordability which attracted a variety of classes. Many of the stereographs featured in this collection were created by James Cremer, who owned and operated James Cremer's Stereoscopic Emporium in central Philadelphia.

Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation local history collection, 1964-2010 (bulk) 1880-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The neighborhood of Torresdale, first settled by Swedish immigrants in the mid 1600s, is located in the northeast section of Philadelphia. An important site in the area is the historic estate Glen Foerd. The Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation local history collection, 1880-2010, is comprised mostly of secondary materials, the bulk of which relate to the history of Torresdale. There are a small amount original photographs, as well as original documents from the Kramer family.

Germantown Historical Society scrapbook and photograph album collection, circa 1880-1989

Abstract:: Germantown, a section of northwest Philadelphia, was settled in the late 1600s. It is well known as the site of the first American anti-slavery protest, the Revolutionary War Battle of Germantown, and the seat of the National government during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The Germantown Historical Society scrapbook collection, circa 1880-1989, contains scrapbooks from multiple creators relating to local Germantown families, events, and organizations.

Abstract:: The Martin Academy was a Quaker school established in 1880 by a bequest of Samuel Martin (1802-1880). The collection contains vouchers and financial notes and some miscellaneous papers, including extracts relating to the Academy in the minutes of Kennett Monthly and Preparative Meetings and legal papers.

LMHS.19: Lower Merion Realty Company minute book, photographs, and brochures, circa 1880-1952

Abstract:: At the turn of the 20th century, the Roberts family of Lower Merion, Pennsylvania decided to consolidate its remaining farm land and form the Lower Merion Realty Company. The company successfully developed land along a new train line, conveniently constructed under the direction of Pennsylvania Railroad president George Brooke Roberts. The collection "Lower Merion Realty Company minute book, photographs, and brochures, circa 1880-1952," contains the minute book of meetings of Stockholders and Directors, 1906-1952, and one binder of photographs with two brochures.
